Relatives of Israeli hostages held by the Palestinian Hamas movement carry a picture of Omer Neutra, 22, in Kibbutz Nirim along the fence on the Gaza border, equipped with powerful loudspeakers hanging from cranes, in an effort to get messages of hope across to them as their time in captivity nears to 100 days, on January 11, 2024. The conflict triggered by Hamas's deadly October 7 attack on Israel has caused massive destruction in the Gaza Strip, killing tens of thousands and leaving residents on the brink of famine. Much of the territory has become unrecognisable, as entire neighbourhoods which were once bustling with people, cars and donkey-drawn carts have been reduced to rubble.
