393145 01: A Guardian Angel keeps watch on a subway August 12, 2001 in New York City. Started in 1979 by Curtis Sliwa, the Guardian Angels were originally a vigilante response to the then rampant crime in New York City. Now, with chapters around the world and violent crime down around the country, the Guardian Angels are having a come back in many urban areas as citizens become increasingly tired of quality of life crimes such as prostitution and drug dealing which they feel the police are unable to quell. With red berets and matching nylon jackets, the Angels voluntarily patrol the streets unarmed in "recons" or patrols looking for suspicious activity. When members encounter a crime in progress they either call the police or make a citizen''s arrest. (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images)
