President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance were not invited to former Vice President Dick Cheney’s Thursday funeral.
Trump’s absence is notable as it is customary for sitting presidents to attend the funerals of former presidents and vice presidents, highlighting President Trump’s poor relationship with the Cheney family.
Former President George W. Bush was in attendance for the funeral, offering a eulogy to Cheney, his vice president during his two terms in the White House.
Bush was joined by former President Joe Biden and former Vice Presidents Kamala Harris, Mike Pence, Al Gore, and Dan Quayle.
GOP Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) were also in attendance.
Cheney died on November 3, 2025, from complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.
Cheney is remembered as one of the most powerful vice presidents in history due to his unprecedented influence on national security policy following the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.
Cheney is also widely described as the chief architect of the war on terror and the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, as he advocated for an aggressive, preemptive foreign policy based on the neoconservative doctrine, resulting in the deaths of roughly 7,000 American service members.
Both Dick Cheney and his daughter, former Representative Liz Cheney, endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris during her 2024 presidential campaign against Trump.
Liz Cheney also led the House investigation into Trump’s role in the January 6, 2021, protests at the U.S. Capitol.
“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old. His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed,” the Cheney family stated at the time of his passing. “The former Vice President died due to complications of oneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.”
“Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing,” his family wrote. “We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”
