Clooney says Kamala’s presidential run was a ‘mistake’ for Democrat Party despite endorsing her: ‘She had to run against her own record’

George Clooney revealed that he believes it was a “mistake” for the Democrat Party to crown former Vice President Kamala Harris as the nominee in the 2024 presidential election after former President Joe Biden dropped out, despite previously endorsing her and urging Biden to drop out.

During a Sunday CBS interview, Clooney discussed his previously released op-ed during the 2024 election cycle in which he called on Biden to drop out of the race due to his obvious cognitive decline. However, Clooney had also called for the party to hold a primary vote, allowing the new nominee to be selected in a democratic process.

“We had a chance,” Clooney stated, reflecting on the election. “I wanted there to be, as I wrote in the op-ed, a primary. Let’s battle-test this quickly and get it up and going.”

Rather than the Democrats holding a primary after Biden exited the race, Harris was pushed into the limelight as the new nominee by party leaders — without winning any democratic vote.

“I think the mistake with it being Kamala is that she had to run against her own record,” Clooney continued. “It’s very hard to do if the point of running is to say, ‘I’m not that person.’ It’s hard to do, and so she was given a very tough task. I think it was a mistake, quite honestly. But we are where we are.”

Clooney also emphasized that although the Democrats lost, it was still a better decision to run Harris over Biden, stating: “We were gonna lose more House seats, they say. So I don’t know. To not do it would be to say, ‘I’m not gonna tell the truth.’”

In a July 2024 op‑ed titled “I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee” for the New York Times, Clooney wrote that after observing Biden’s poor performance, highlighting age concerns, the party needed to pick someone else.

“We are not going to win in November with this president. On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate. This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and congress member, and governor that I’ve spoken with in private. Every single one, irrespective of what he or she is saying publicly.”

In the wake of Donald Trump’s electoral triumph, Hunter Biden unleashed a profanity-laced tirade — more befitting a furious teenager than a man in his fifties — after brooding over Clooney’s pointed election-season critique.

“F*** him!” Hunter Biden raged. “F*** him and everybody around him. I don’t have to be f***ing nice!”

Clooney soon responded back to Hunter comments, opting to disengage despite having strong personal opinions on the matter.

“I could spend a lot of time debunking many of the things he said … but the reality is, I don’t think looking backwards like that is helpful to anyone. Particularly to him,” Clooney stated.

“I don’t think it is helpful to the Democratic Party. So I’m just going to wish him well on his ongoing recovery and I hope he does well and just leave it at that.”

Clooney lives in Lake Como, Italy, when he’s not working on a film, but he also has a residence in Los Angeles, California.
