NEW YORK (Reuters) – The New York Jets are parting with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the team said on Thursday, closing the book on the ill-fated partnership between the team and the four-time NFL MVP.

The Jets signed the 10-time Pro Bowler in a 2023 trade with the Green Bay Packers but Rodgers’ tenure in New York derailed when he tore his Achilles tendon minutes into his regular season debut with the team.

The 41-year-old started all 17 games and threw for 3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdowns in the most recent season but repeated rumors of friction with team owners led to widespread speculation that he was unlikely to return.

“Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback,” coach Aaron Glenn and General Manager Darren Mougey said in a statement.

“It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures.

“We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.”

The Jets are seventh in the 2025 NFL Draft order.

Team owner Woody Johnson said Rodgers, who won a Super Bowl with Green Bay, “embodied all that it meant to be a New York Jet.”

“His arrival in 2023 was met with unbridled excitement and I will forever be grateful that he chose to join us to continue his Hall of Fame career,” Johnson said in a statement.
