Hours after the GOP conference nominated House Majority Whip Tom Emmer as the speaker designate, he announced his withdrawal from the race.
Emmer (R-Minn.) pulled his name from the race after a large group of Republicans said they would not be supporting him on the House floor, making it clear he would not receive the majority 217 votes needed to win.
The decision comes after former President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that Emmer is a “RINO” and claimed that voting for him “would be a tragic mistake.”
With Emmer’s withdrawal he becomes the third GOP Speaker nominee to not be elected. The GOP members failed to elect Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio.) last week after three failed attempts to attain the gavel.
Additionally, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) withdrew his name from the running after not garnering enough support within the conference.
Meanwhile, with Emmer dropping out from the race, the GOP will have to reshuffle again as they start the search over to replace ousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
