A Beechcraft 55 twin-engine aircraft experienced engine failure, specifically loss of power in both engines, shortly after departing on an instructional flight from Merritt Island Airport in Florida’s Brevard County.
The pilot reported the issue to air traffic control and attempted an emergency landing on the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near mile marker 201 in Cocoa, at around 5:45 p.m. ET.
However, during the landing, the plane collided with a Toyota Camry, heavily damaging the vehicle and scattering debris across the highway.
The 57-year-old female driver of the Camry sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized, while the 27-year-old pilot and passenger escaped unharmed. Lanes were temporarily closed for wreckage removal, but traffic later reopened.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause, with the NTSB examining flight data, maintenance records, and pilot credentials. Dashcam and social media videos captured the dramatic descent and impact.
This was the second emergency landing of a small plane on a roadway in Central Florida that day. The first occurred around 2 p.m. in Volusia County and did not involve a collision with any vehicles.
“Do you know how much I loved my car?” the driver laughed in a video taken moments after the crash. “Am I the only one who got hit?”
The Melbourne woman, whose name has not been released to the public, was assisted out of the heavily damaged Toyota in a video posted to social media. “God is good,” the driver declared, as emergency crews examined her injuries.
