A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot an illegal alien on Friday morning in Franklin Park, Illinois, after he attempted to drive his car into agents, according to authorities.
A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official told the press that the agent was trying to make an arrest when the now-deceased man, Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, resisted and attempted to drive his vehicle into the agents. The agent was then forced to open fire.
ICE officials confirmed the shooting, describing it as part of “targeted law enforcement activity.”
“During a vehicle stop, the suspect resisted and attempted to drive his vehicle into the arrest team, striking an officer and subsequently dragging him as he fled the scene. Fearing for his life, the officer discharged his firearm and struck the subject,” the statement said.
The incident ended when the illegal alien driver crashed into a truck. The truck driver later posted video on social media showing a wrecked Subaru wedged under the trailer, with two officers on the ground next to the driver.
ICE announced that both the agent and the suspect were taken to a local hospital for treatment, where the illegal alien later died. The agency also reiterated that the ICE agent was dragged by the vehicle and suffered “severe injuries.” His condition has since stabilized.
Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez has a criminal history of reckless driving, and DHS stated that he entered the country illegally on an “unknown date.”
Surveillance video from a nearby nail salon shows ICE officers arriving in a Jeep with lights flashing, stopping directly in front of the Subaru driven by Villegas-Gonzalez. Agents approach the vehicle, with one at the passenger-side window and another at the driver’s side.
The officer at the passenger side, closest to the nail salon’s cameras, appears to try to open the car door. Villegas-Gonzalez then begins backing up and drives away. The video shows the officer at the passenger-side window, but the agent at the driver’s side was the one dragged by the vehicle, DHS explained.
Surveillance footage from another nearby business also shows a truck traveling west on Grand Avenue, followed by Villegas-Gonzalez’s Subaru moving from the right to left lane. Moments later, two loud sounds resembling gunshots can be heard.
Jose Pedro De Blas, who works at a nearby auto body shop, recorded a video of the incident immediately after the shooting and crash.
“I thought this was just a regular run-of-the-mill car crash,” he said. “I go out and I see a large police presence. A large military presence. I even saw a guy with a large FBI jacket and you only see those at the movies.”
Meanwhile, Villegas-Gonzalez’s girlfriend, Blanca Mora, speaking through an interpreter, told the press that she wants the truth to come out, claiming that ICE is “lying” about the shooting.
The FBI confirmed it has been notified of the situation and is assisting with the investigation.
“The FBI is aware of the incident in Franklin Park and is assisting law enforcement in response,” a spokesperson for the Chicago field office said. “There is no threat to public safety or further information available at this time.”
