On Tuesday, Kamala Harris revealed her intentions to utilize her position as vice president to address the “inequality” of restroom spaces on domestic flights.
“The majority of domestic flights do not have accessible restrooms. This is absolutely unacceptable,” Harris tweeted on Tuesday afternoon . “Our administration will soon announce a solution to help end this inequity.”
Harris told FOX that her tweet was referring to the rules that the Department of Transportation drafted last year in which they claimed would create more accessibility for people with disabilities by upgrading single-aisle aircraft restrooms.
Hannah Walden, a communications manager for Airlines for America, which represents domestic airlines like American, Delta, Southwest, United, and Jetblue, indicated that U.S. airlines are reportedly willing and able to follow new guidelines from the Department of Transportation to accommodate disabled individuals.
Harris and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg held a roundtable on Tuesday discussing the rules with disability rights leaders.
According to reports, a spokesman for the International Air Transport Association maintained that airlines are prepared to continue their commitment to safety for all passengers.
“The airline industry is committed to ensuring that safe, reliable and dignified air travel is equally accessible to all passengers, while recognizing that more needs to be done,” the spokesman told FOX.
Harris’ announcement caused many Twitter users to lambaste her for prioritizing inclusivity in airplane bathrooms rather than issues at the southern border and inflation.
Many others pointed out that the expansion of plane restrooms will hike the prices of flight travel.
“So when seating capacity is diminished, do you plan to deploy the government to solve the pricing problem the government created?” an Arizona Libertarian group responded.
Harris’ announcement comes weeks after hitting record lows in polling favorability. According to FiveThirtyEight polls, Harris’ approval rating has dropped to 35%.
