On Tuesday, a federal judge indefinitely postponed President Donald Trump’s classified documents trial date in Florida.

In a filing, Judge Aileen Cannon announced the May 20th date will be delayed in order to solve pre-trial motions in the case.

Cannon wrote that the “finalization of a trial date at this juncture—before resolution of the myriad and interconnected pre-trial and CIPA issues remaining and forthcoming—would be imprudent and inconsistent with the Court’s duty to fully and fairly consider the various pending pre-trial motions before the Court, critical CIPA issues, and additional pretrial and trial preparations necessary to present this case to a jury.”

“The Court therefore vacates the current May 20, 2024, trial date (and associated calendar call), to be reset by separate order following resolution of the matters before the Court, consistent with Defendants’ right to due process and the public’s interest in the fair and efficient administration of justice,” Cannon continued.

The trial, brought forth by Special Counsel for the United States Department of Justice Jack Smith, alleged that Trump willfully retained classified documents at his home after he left office.

In June of 2023, Trump was indicted on charges resulting from Smith’s probe into his alleged unauthorized retention of secret materials following his administration.

Jack Smith claimed that Trump knowingly kept classified documents at his residence following his departure from the White House. He also claimed that the 45th president hid the documents from federal authorities when they visited his home, Mar-a-Lago.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to 37 counts, including willfully withholding national defense information, conspiring to obstruct justice, and making false statements.

This comes as a win from team Trump, as it is unlikely that the trial will occur prior to the 2024 presidential election.

A new trial date has yet to be set.
