In an agency news release on Monday, The CBP stated that their officers were monitoring the bridge on Friday when they were made aware of a “suspicious vehicle.”

The vehicle, identified as a 2018 Nissan, was being driven by a “50-year-old male Texan from the U.S.” who had attempted to come back to the U.S. from Mexico when they pulled over the car for inspection.

“The vehicle was referred to CBP secondary for further examination after a primary inspection,” the release said. “While in the secondary inspection area, with the aid of a canine unit, CBP officers discovered 14 packages hidden within the vehicle. CBP officers removed the packages, which contained a total of 27.42 pounds of alleged cocaine.”

The CBP press release went on to say that the cocaine had an “estimated value of $366,183.”

Michael B. Reyes, the Port director at the Brownsville Port of Entry, told reporters that the officers utilized multiple tools to conduct the inspection.

“Our officers use multiple enforcement tools to conduct their inspections and their efforts led to this significant narcotics interception,” said Reyes.

The release also states that the driver and passenger have now been placed in Homeland Security investigation custody and that the illicit drugs were retained by CBP officers.
