Apple jumped Samsung last quarter, shipping 50.1 million iPhones in the first three months of 2024, which was a 9.6% year-over-years drop, IDC reported Sunday. However, Apple’s smartphone shipments in China decreased 2.1% in the final quarter of 2023 from a year earlier.

Samsung delivered 60.1 million smartphones in the first quarter, which was 0.7% less than the year-ago period. Samsung now has a 20.8% market share of all smartphone sales, which jumped above Apple’s 17.3% share.

“The smartphone market is emerging from the turbulence of the last two years both stronger and changed,” Nabila Popal, research director at IDC, told Bloomberg.

“While Apple has been super resilient and seen a lot of growth in shipments and share over the last few years, it will be a challenge for it to maintain the pace of growth and the peak share it saw in 2023. As the market recovers further in 2024, IDC expects Android to grow much faster than Apple.”

Additionally, smartphone deliveries globally increased 7.8% total overall in the first quarter, with a total of 289.4 million smartphones being sent out in the latest period.

However, Chinese brands such as Huawei have gained a bigger share of the iPhone market, IDC data showed. Furthermore, Xiaomi, one of China’s top smartphone makers, placed third with a market share of 14.1%, selling 50.1 million units.

Meanwhile, Apple will hold its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, where it will discuss updates on software for iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices.

Apple made headlines recently after it announced it was canceling plans to produce an electric car, and will instead increase work production on its generative AI projects.

The electric car named “Project Titan,” the initiative was doomed to fail from the stat in 2014, including when it had trouble navigating streets, running into curbs, veering all over roads and into the middle of intersections, while nearly hitting a jogger during a test drive in Silicon Valley in 2022.

A month after the failed driving test, Apple laid off 614 workers.

The company also lost the title as the world’s most valuable company to Microsoft earlier this year.
