Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) previously stated in a resurfaced divorce proceeding that doctors found a worm in his brain after it had already “ate a part of it.”

According to a report by the New York Times, RFK Jr. made the claims during his 2012 divorce proceeding, stating that he had “cognitive problems” and that he initially assumed it was a brain tumor. However, a second doctor who took a closer look later told him it was actually a dead parasite, Kennedy said.

RFK Jr. was scheduled to have surgery at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina before seeking a second opinion. The surgeon performed the same procedure on his uncle, Sen. Edward Kennedy, who passed away from brain cancer in 2009.

He then recalled in the transcripted interview that, while he was packing for the trip, he received a call from a doctor at New York-Presbyterian Hospital who said that he thought the abnormality “was caused by a worm that got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then died.”

Kennedy acknowledged that he was unsure of the exact time he might have picked up the parasite, but he speculated that it could have happened during a previous trip to South Asia.

According to medical professionals who were contacted by the Times, it was most likely a “pork tapeworm larva,” which typically induces headaches, seizures, and dizziness in people when the tapeworm dies.

In his 2012 deposition, RFK Jr. also claimed that he had eaten too many tuna fish sandwiches and had become mercury poisoned. A medical professional told the Times that this was likely the true cause of Kennedy’s neurological problems.

“I have cognitive problems, clearly,” the son of the late attorney general and senator from New York said at the time. “I have short-term memory loss, and I have longer-term memory loss that affects me.”

Kennedy emphasized that he suffered from “severe brain fog” and had trouble retrieving words around the same time that his mercury levels were 10 times what the Environmental Protection Agency considers safe.

“I loved tuna fish sandwiches. I ate them all the time,” RFK Jr. said.

At the time, Kennedy had been going through a divorce with his second wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy, when he revealed his health problems. RFK also claimed that these issues had diminished his earning potential.

After two health scares, he says that he altered a few things in his life, which included sleeping more, traveling less, and eating less fish. When asked if RFK Jr.’s health issues would impact his ability to serve as president, a spokesperson for the 2024 Kennedy presidential campaign told the Times, “That is a hilarious suggestion, given the competition.”
