A report suggests that Israel is on high alert for a direct attack from Iran, with details from insiders saying it could come as soon as Friday.

The reported attack is expected to target Israeli Defense Forces positions that could include over 100 drones and dozens of missiles, two U.S. officials told CBS News.

According to the insiders, it would be difficult for Israel to defend itself against such a large-scale attack, but they also suggested that Iran could launch a smaller-scale attack to not escalate tensions between the two sides even further.

“The strike plans are in front of the Supreme Leader and he is still weighing the political risk,” an adviser to Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said.

The report of the suspected attack by Iran comes after the Israeli strike on April 1st that killed seven Iranian military officers, U.S. experts warned.

However, Iran has not officially spoken on how they will go about the attack, as the reports continue to cause experts to think that the Israel-Hamas war could expand and become a larger regional war.

Additionally, the U.S. State Department warned Americans in Israel on Thursday to not travel outside major cities, which are better protected by the Iron Dome Missile Defense System.

“Whoever harms us, we will harm them,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a response to the latest reports of an attack.

“We are prepared … both defensively and offensively,” the 74-year-old stated.

Meanwhile, Sima Shine, a security expert and former Mossad official warned this possible attack by Iran could escalate this war even further.

“They will try to do it on the military or some military asset,” Shine said of Iran’s potential targets on Israeli soil.

“But the question will be the damage. If there would be many injured people, killed or injured … I think it has the potential for a huge escalation,” she warned.

Furthermore, Shine also said she does not believe that either side wants a large-scale regional war.

U.S. officials have stated that they are “really trying to avoid war,” Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr. told CBS on Friday morning.

“This is part of the dialogue that I have with my counterparts within the region, to include the Israeli chief of defense, who I talked to yesterday,” he said of the US’ efforts to contain the situation.
