Newly elected president Javier Milei’s future foreign minister stated that Argentina has decided not to join the BRICS group of developing nations in the upcoming year.
Diana Mondino, who Milei picked as his foreign minister once he is sworn into office on December 10th, wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, that they “will not join BRICS.”
BRICS is an intergovernmental organization and Argentina was one of six nations invited in August to become part of the 11-nation bloc that already included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
During his campaign trail, libertarian Milei sharply criticized China and hinted at severing diplomatic ties with the nation, declaring in an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, “[he is] not going to do business with any communist.”
Modino stated that BRICS “is more related to a political alignment than to advantages that could exist for trade between countries.”
“We already have diplomatic and trade relations with most of them,” she continued.
Argentina was scheduled to join the organization on January 1st, 2024.
During his campaign, Milei, who is an admirer of former President Donald Trump, repeatedly stated that if he were to win “[his] allies would be the United States and Israel.”
