Special Counsel John Durham is set to testify before the House Judiciary Committee in June about his recently released report on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s probe into Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, June 21st, a day after Durham is due to appear in a closed-door session with the House Intelligence committee.
The two sessions come as Durham finished his four-year investigation into operation “Crossfire Hurricane,” the FBI’s investigation that looked into whether President Donald Trump had coordinated with Russia to influence the 2016 elections.
The report released by Durham had slammed the FBI, saying that the agency had conducted Crossfire Hurricane in a different manner than other investigations. He also found that the FBI had rushed the investigation forward on “raw, unanalyzed, and uncorroborated intelligence.”
“The Department did not adequately examine or question these materials and the motivations of those providing them, even when at about the same time the Director of the FBI and others learned of significant and potentially contrary intelligence,” the report said.
Durham had concluded that the Department of Justice and the FBI had “failed to uphold their mission of strict fidelity to the law” when conducting their investigation.
Durham also said that senior personnel at the FBI had “displayed a serious lack of analytical rigor towards the information they received,” referring to former FBI Director James Comey, and former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, and that they had “discounted or willfully ignored” information and evidence that did not support their narrative.
“In short, it is the Office’s assessment that the FBI discounted or willfully ignored material information that did not support the narrative of a collusive relationship between Trump and Russia,” the report concluded. “Similarly, the FBI Inspection Division Report says that the investigators ‘repeatedly ignore[d] or explain[ed] away evidence contrary to the theory the Trump campaign … had conspired with Russia …. It appeared that … there was a pattern of assuming nefarious intent.’ 1749 An objective and honest assessment of these strands of information should have caused the FBI to question not only the predication for Crossfire Hurricane, but also to reflect on whether the FBI was being manipulated for political or other purposes. Unfortunately, it did not.”
After the release of his report, Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who serves as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee said that he had invited Durham to appear before his panel.
“Please be prepared to summarize your testimony with a ten-minute opening statement and to answer questions posed by committee members,” a letter from Jordan addressed to Durham said.
