Liberal talk show host Jimmy Kimmel says that he has obtained Italian citizenship and suggested he might relocate to Europe in light of President Donald Trump’s second term in office.
Kimmel made the remarks during a Friday appearance on comedian Sarah Silverman’s podcast “The Sarah Silverman Podcast” — as the two discussed President Trump’s second time in office.
“A lot of people I know are thinking about where are they going to get citizenship?” Silverman stated.
Advertisement“I do have … I did get Italian citizenship. I do have that,” Kimmel responded, suggesting that he may flee the United States.
“What’s going on is … as bad as you thought it was gonna be, it’s so much worse. It’s just unbelievable. I feel like it’s probably even worse than [Trump] would like it to be,” he continued, absent an explanation of his complaint.
At another point in the discussion, while presenting himself as a forgiving and understanding individual, Kimmel voiced support for Americans who had once backed Trump but have since withdrawn that support, remarking: “People go ‘F* you, you supported him.’ I don’t buy into that. I don’t believe ‘F*** you, you supported him.’”
“I think the door needs to stay open. If you want to change your mind, that’s so hard to do. If you want to admit you were wrong, that’s so hard and so rare to do. You are welcome,” Kimmel added.
Kimmel, a longstanding critic of President Trump, has intensified his insults toward the administration since the president celebrated the cancellation of his friend Stephen Colbert’s late-night show. Trump weighed in further, contending that not only should Colbert be taken off the air, but Kimmel’s program as well — declaring that he “has no talent.”
“It hasn’t worked, really, for a long time, and I would say pretty much from the beginning. Colbert has no talent,” Trump said previously.
“I mean, I could take anybody here. I could go outside in the beautiful streets and pick a couple of people that do just as well or better. They’d get higher ratings than [Colbert]. He’s got no talent,” he continued before moving on to call out other late-night acts.
“Fallon [also] has no talent. Kimmel has no talent. They’re next. They’re going to be going. I hear they’re going to be going. I don’t know, but I would imagine because they’d get – you know, Colbert has better ratings than Kimmel or Fallon,” Trump added.
Kimmel’s announcement follows Rosie O’Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres’s decisions to relocate to foreign nations following the 2024 presidential election.
