The Illinois election board has voted to keep former President Donald Trump on their 2024 primary state ballot.
On Tuesday, the board unanimously ruled to keep the 45th president on their state ballot after its hearing officer found that a “preponderance of the evidence” maintained that “Trump is ineligible to run for president” because he allegedly violated a constitutional ban on those who “engaged in insurrection” from holding office.
However, he recommended that the board let the courts make the ultimate decision.
The eight-member board, which is made up of four Republicans and four Democrats, decided it lacked the jurisdiction to decide whether Trump had broken any laws and accepted to allow him to stay on the ballot.
One of the board members, Catherine McCrory, maintained that she believes January 6th was an insurrection but agreed that the board does not have jurisdiction to enforce that conclusion.
“I want it to be clear that this Republican believes that there was an insurrection on Jan. 6. There’s no doubt in my mind that he manipulated, instigated, aided and abetted an insurrection on Jan. 6,” McCrory said.
Trump praised the decision on his social media platform Truth Social, posting “the VOTE was 8-0 in favor of keeping your favorite President (ME!), on the Ballot.”
The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments next week in Trump’s appeal of a Colorado decision that deemed him ineligible to be president in that state.
