The House of Representatives voted in favor of a resolution condemning the “horrors of socialism” on Friday morning, just hours before NYC mayoral-elect Zohran Mamdani was set to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House.

The bipartisan resolution, introduced by GOP Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.), passed by a vote of 285-98, with Republicans unanimously voting in favor of the measure.

“Congress denounces socialism in all its forms, and opposed the implementation of socialist policies in the United States,” the resolution read.

The resolution highlighted past failed efforts to implement socialism, contending that such regimes have historically “collapsed into communist regimes, totalitarian rule, and brutal dictatorships.” It specifically cited China under Mao Zedong, Cuba under Fidel Castro, and Russia under Vladimir Lenin and Josef Stalin—regimes that resulted in “famine and mass murders.”

86 Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the measure, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), despite his prior endorsement of Mamdani, a self-described Democratic socialist.

However, the more “progressive” wing of the Democrat Party, which includes representatives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), voted no on the measure.

Meanwhile, GOP Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) made a point to denounce socialism as being incompatible with American values, proclaiming that socialism “always leads to a destruction of liberties for people.”

“We have a responsibility to defend the American core of capitalism, free markets and liberty [against] socialism, democratic socialism, communism, authoritarianism, [and] fascism,” he added.

According to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), an organization Mamdani is a member of, Democratic socialists believe that capitalism is a “system designed by the owning class to exploit the rest of us for their own profit.”

“We want a democracy that creates space for us all to flourish not just survive and answers the fundamental questions of our lives with the input of all. We want to collectively own the key economic drivers that dominate our lives, such as energy production and transportation. We want the multiracial working class united in solidarity instead of divided by fear,” the organization’s website states.

Mamdani ran on socialist policies such as taxpayer-funded bus fares, taxpayer-funded child care, city-owned grocery stores, and rent freezes for subsidized units.

President Trump is set to meet with Mamdani at the White House after a public feud over opposing ideologies, as Mamdani vowed to stand up against the president’s mass deportation campaign.

“My team reached out to the White House to set up this meeting because I will work with anyone to make life more affordable for the more than eight and a half million people who call this city home,” Mamdani stated on Thursday.

“I intend to make it clear to President Trump that I will work with him on any agenda that benefits New Yorkers. If any agenda hurts New Yorkers, I will also be the first to say so,” he added.

Despite previous comments calling Mamdani a “little Communist,” President Trump stated on Friday that he expects the meeting to be “quite civil.”

“I think we’ll get along fine,” Trump added. “Look, we don’t need a communist in this country, but if we have one, I’m going to be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation.”
