On Monday, Google, the tech giant, released its “Year in Search” report for 2023, which is a summary of the year’s most searched queries.

The top global queries included popular moments in history that occurred throughout 2023, ranging from pop culture moments and movies, like Barbenheimer, to the passing of notable figures and devastating worldwide news with global implications.

According to Google’s data, the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict surpassed top news trends in 2023, along with searches related to the Titanic-bound submersible that suffered a “catastrophic implosion” in June, as well as February’s tragic earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

The war between Israel and Hamas has dominated news headlines for the past two months, after a surprise attack on southern Israel initiated by Hamas on October 7th. This prompted a global reaction as demonstrators began taking on capitols and other prominent government buildings to protest Hamas’ brutal attack, the rise in anti-Semitic offenses, and Israel’s retaliation efforts against the Gaza Strip.

Damar Hamlin, who is a safety for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills football team, was Google’s most trending individual on search in 2023. Hamlin dealt with near-death cardiac arrest in January while playing football, but has since recovered and celebrated a successful comeback.

Actor Jeremy Renner followed Hamlin as one of the top searched people on Google in 2023, after he survived a severe snow plow accident earlier this year.

The late Matthew Perry and Tina Turner also topped search trends among other memorable celebrities who passed away this year.

Regarding the entertainment world, the 2023 film Barbie conquered Google search’s film trends in 2023, along with Oppenheimer and Jawan.

In the world of Television, The Last of Us, Wednesday, and Ginny and Georgia were the top three trending shows in 2023.

More prominent Google searches in 2023 included many consumers in the United States asking why “eggs,” “Taylor Swift tickets,” and “sriracha bottles” were so high in price.

There is additional data, including country-specific reports and trends from years past, on Google’s “Year in Search”’s library.

Google announced that it had gathered its 2023 search results from January 1st through November 27th of this year.
