Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich published a column in The Guardian on Friday, regarding tactics big businesses and governments could utilize to control billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Reich, who served during Bill Clinton’s presidency, stated that there were six ways to “rein in Musk,” including that “Regulators around the world should threaten Musk with arrest,” and that the Federal Trade Commission should “sue him,” if Musk does not censor content on X (Twitter).

Establishment connected figures have largely been critical of Musk following his acquisition of Twitter, which he has since renamed to X, due to Musk being a “free-speech absolutist,” rather than censoring dissenting voices.

Musk, largely apolitical in his past, has been more active recently. He has enforced former President Donald Trump and even hosted a record breaking live interview with Trump on his platform last month.

“He may be the richest man in the world. He may own one of the world’s most influential social media platforms. But that doesn’t mean we’re powerless to stop him,” Reich wrote.

Reich also insinuated that Musk is facilitating election interference from Russia and other foreign entities on his widely popular social platform in favor of Trump.

“Evidence is mounting that Russia and other foreign agents are using X to disrupt this year’s presidential race, presumably in favor of Trump. Musk has done little to stop them,” Reich added.

Additionally, along with the suggestions of litigation and government entities threatening Musk with arrest, Reich also suggested for advertisers to boycott X, consumers to boycott Tesla, and for the U.S. government to stop giving contracts to Musk’s other separate company, SpaceX.

“Why is the U.S. government allowing Musk’s satellites and rocket launchers to become crucial to the nation’s security when he’s shown utter disregard for the public interest? Why give Musk more economic power when he repeatedly abuses it and demonstrates contempt for the public good?” he continued.

At the end of the article, Reich announced that he published a new book, leading to questions regarding the true intent of the article.

Reich’s final suggestion was for Americans to “make sure Musk’s favorite candidate for president is not elected.”
