Twenty-nine people were injured and are in “delicate-serious” condition, according to the National Immigration Institute.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed that Migrants protesting their possible deportation set fire to mattresses at an immigration detention center in northern Mexico, near the United State border.

“They never imagined that this would cause this terrible misfortune,” López Obrador said.

Among those that responded to the tragedy were law enforcement, ambulances, firefighters, and vans from the morgue.

It was reported that rows of bodies were laid out under shimmery silver sheets outside the detention center.

According to INM, the facility was home to 68 men from Central and South America. 29 other migrants were injured in the fire and were sent to four local hospitals for treatment in critical to serious condition.

The agency has said that a complaint has been made with the appropriate authorities to initiate an investigation into the occurrence. The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) of Mexico was given permission to participate in court procedures to protect international migrants.

The INM stated that it will assist in legal inquiries “to clarify these unfortunate facts.”

This tragedy comes as dual border hearings are scheduled on Capitol Hill Tuesday.
