Government transparency is the focus of a new piece of bipartisan legislation introduced by Representatives James Comer and Katie Porter.

The Republican and Democrat teamed up to draft the Presidential Ethics Reform Act. It was shared on Wednesday.

The bill mandates that presidents and vice presidents must disclose loans made to family members, provide documentation whenever a family member travels with them, and reveal any gifts or items of value received from a foreign country while in office and for two years before and after their term. Additionally, it requires presidents to disclose any conflicts of interest.

In a video statement, the pair discussed the need to create transparency within the government by creating leadership Americans can trust.

Comer (R-Ky.) explained that influence peddling is a “cottage industry” in Washington and that he and Porter (D-Calif.) have identified deficiencies in law that have led to a culture of corruption.

“Influence peddling is a cottage industry in Washington and we’ve identified deficiencies in current law that have led to a culture of corruption. By creating this bipartisan legislation to provide greater transparency to the financial interactions related to the office of the president and vice-president, we can ensure that moving forward American presidents, vice presidents, and their family members cannot profit from their proximity to power,” Comer said in a statement.

“By boosting transparency and requiring additional financial disclosures, Congress can shine a light on improper conduct in the Executive Branch — or be confident that none occurred,” Porter added.

It’s unclear when the legislation will be voted on.
