The longest wooden pier on the western United States coastline has caught on fire, with firefighters being called to fight the ongoing blaze and its massive plume of smoke.

On Thursday afternoon, firefighters responded to reports of a fire in a vacant building at the end of the 1,954-foot pier. The structure was previously a Ruby’s Diner restaurant.

Oceanside officials have asked the public to avoid the area completely.

The famous pier was first built back in 1888. However, it was destroyed by chaotic waves in 1890 and again in 1902.

Overall, it has had over six restorations.

The most recent restoration of the pier debuted on September 27th, 1987. In the last year, it has undergone a $5.5 million upgrade to its pipes and electrical system.
