On Wednesday, dozens of vessels sailed up the Hudson River to kick off the weeklong tradition in the ceremonial “Parade of Ships.”

Over 2,500 personnel will participate in events throughout the Tri-State area from May 22nd-28th. Events include free concerts, aviation shows, Navy and Coast Guard demonstrations, movie screenings and more.

The annual celebration honors those who serve in the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps.

The vessels featured in Wednesday’s fleet included two Naval vessels, such as the Navy’s finest amphibious assault ship, USS Bataan, three Coast Guard ships, four Naval Academy yard patrol boats and two ships from Germany.

“As we come together to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice during their service, we are reminded of the diverse and inclusive fighting force that is currently serving to protect national security and preserve our way of life,” said Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Rear Adm. Wesley McCall. “Our service members are excited for the opportunity to engage with the community and create lasting connections with the people of New York during this time-honored tradition.”
