Bernie Sanders has won Vermont’s Senate race.
Independent incumbent Bernie Sanders faced off against Republican challenger Gerald Malloy in the Vermont Senate race.
Sanders has held the state’s Senate seat since 2006.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Sanders went to Brooklyn College and the University of Chicago, later moving to Vermont.
He was elected as mayor of Burlington in 1981 and served until 1989, moving on to become a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007.
Sanders threw out a couple bids for governor during his time as mayor and also sought the Democrat nomination for president in 2016, but lost to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
His top issues on the campaign trail included the economy, energy and environment, Medicare for all, Wall Street reform, higher education, and more.
Sanders’ opponent campaigned on the notion that it’s time for new leadership.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Malloy served in the Army from 1980 to 2006. He earned a graduate degree from Temple University in 1996 and a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1984.
Malloy said in America’s current polarized and divided political state he offers common sense, open-mindedness, and character, vowing to strive to create unity for Vermont’s future.
He campaigned on promises to act with discipline and fiscal responsibility, improving public education, fully supporting law enforcement, enforcing immigration laws and more.
At the time of this reporting, Sanders won with 61% of the vote compared to Mallory’s 34.6%
