Angus King has won Maine’s Senate race.

Incumbent Senator Angus King (I) faced off against David Costello (D-Maine), Demi Kouzounas (R-Maine), and Jason Cherry (I) in the race for Maine’s seat in the upper chamber.

King was elected as Maine’s first Independent Senator in 2012. Prior to his time in the Senate, King also served as the governor of Maine from 1995 to 2003.

He’s served on several committees including, but not limited to the Senate Committee on Armed Services, Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, and the Senate Committee on Veterans’ affairs.

Democrat David Costello said his more than 25 years of senior-level government experience provides him with the skills necessary to make a meaningful difference in Washington.

He served as top aide to the Maine Secretary of State in the 1990s. Costello also worked as top aide to the Mayor of Baltimore in the early to middle 2000s and senior aide to the Governor of Maryland from 2007 to 2011.

Costello’s top issues centered around the economy, health care, climate change, immigration, retirement security and more.

Republican challenger Demi Kouzounas is an Army veteran who served in Germany during the Cold War with her husband.

After completing their military service, the couple opened two dental practices and a neighborhood community mall.

“As a small business owner, Demi understands the critical role small businesses play as the backbone of our economy,” Kouzounas’ website said.

Kouzounas also ran for the Maine House of Representatives in 2012, but was defeated in the general election.

Her top issues focused on the economy, pushing bipartisan solutions, safety and security, and giving Mainers a voice.

Independent candidate Jason Cherry earned a law degree from George Mason School of Law. Throughout his career, Cherry worked as a conservation officer, criminal defense attorney, and FBI Special Agent.

He’s an attorney that specializes in cybersecurity and this was his first run for political office.

Cherry’s top issues centered around term limits, protections for the bill of rights, judiciary reform and more.

At the time of this reporting, King won with 52.3% of the vote.

96% of the expected votes have been counted.
