Local authorities reported that a CSX train derailed 31 rail cars near Trenton in Todd County, Kentucky, close to the Kentucky-Tennessee border. One rail car had a large inventory of sulfur that ignited during the crash.

The cause of the derailment is unknown and is currently under investigation. No injuries have been reported, and the area has since been deemed safe from potential toxic fumes.

The incident occurred at around 6:20 a.m. local time on Tuesday. Todd County Emergency Management was immediately contacted and quickly responded to the scene, issuing a half-mile shelter-in-place order around the impacted site. The order was lifted at around 12:30 p.m.

U.S. Route 41, the primary artery connecting the towns of Trenton and Pembroke, is still closed down, with authorities shifting their focus on cleanup and detour efforts. There is currently no estimated time when the closure will be lifted, but Todd County officials described it as a “long-term blockage.”

Following the incident, hazmat crews flooded the scene from various agencies. Authorities have since announced that a portion of the land was damaged in the crash, but the extent of the damage is currently unknown.

“The cleanup is going to be long-term, this is going to take several days,” said Lieutenant Patrick Turner with the Todd County Sheriff’s Office. He added that there is a shelter-in-place order in effect for nearby residents.
