The suburban Village of Broadview, Illinois, has been placed under a civil emergency order by local officials following anti-ICE riots, bomb threats, and death threats against city leadership — in relation to a local U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing center.
The order was issued on November 17th by Mayor Katrina Thompson in response to a September bomb threat to Village Hall, followed up by an October death threat against her personally, as well as consistent clashes between rioters and law enforcement outside of the facility.
According to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) press release, the Village of Broadview has continued to face increasing threats, including an incident on November 15th in which “out-of-town protesters, non-Broadview residents” attempted to “Storm Village Hall” while threatening to “shut down” a Monday board meeting.
The Saturday protests, which saw rioters “jump security barriers” outside of the Broadview ICE processing center, led to a total of 21 arrests, leaving four officers injured.
“For well over a month, rioters have attacked the Broadview field officer and Illinois streets,” a senior DHS official stated. “They have created serious public safety and officer safety threats: assaulting law enforcement, attacking law enforcement with vehicles, throwing tear gas cans, slashing tires, getting arrested with firearms in their possession, blocking the entrance of the building, and trespassing on private property.”
“Now, local officials were forced to declare a ‘Civil Emergency’ given police injuries, a death threat, and a bomb threat,” the DHS official continued.
“All this garbage about ICE facilities is contributing to our officers facing an 8000% increase in death threats against them. As ICE arrests and removes criminal illegal aliens and public safety threats from the U.S., the agency has worked diligently to obtain greater necessary detention space while avoiding overcrowding.”
The statement concluded by reminding left-wing agitators that the Broadview facility is a “processing center, not a detention center. Detainees are briefly processed before being transferred to detention facilities. Some of the worst of the worst including pedophiles, gang members, and rapists have been processed through the facility in recent weeks.”
According to a release from the Village of Broadview, the emergency order will remain until the mayor determines that the threats to village officials are no longer active. The emergency order allows the city council to move public meetings online, as well as implement additional security measures without board approval.
