President Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday that he has a strong sense of his preferred choice for the next Federal Reserve chair—and it’s not Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
While expressing admiration for Bessent, Trump noted to reporters that the secretary isn’t interested in the position.
President Trump revealed his administration has been in talks with several different candidates, adding that he wants current chair Jerome Powell out of there immediately.
“He’s a fool. He’s a stupid man,” the president said when talking about Powell.
While he did not name any candidates specifically, he did say he has a variety of candidates in mind for the high-ranking roll.
Bessent told reporters they will be sitting down with the remaining candidates in the “near future.”
The Federal Reserve Chair is the leader of the U.S. central bank, responsible for guiding monetary policy, including interest rates, inflation control, and economic stability. Powell’s term expires in May 2026.
