Trump is hosting five leaders from West Africa Wednesday for a White House summit aimed at fostering trade to counter the growing regional influence of Russia and China. The White House is seeking to strengthen economic ties with the mineral-rich region as it curbs foreign aid to Africa, where countries have been hit by a 10 percent global import tariff announced by Trump. President Donald Trump has announced new tariff rates for seven more countries.

On Wednesday, Trump imposed a 30% tariff on Algeria, Iraq, Libya and Sri Lanka. Additionally, the president imposed a 25% tariff on Brunei and Moldova and a 20% tariff on the Philippines.

The president sent letters to each country’s leader, emphasizing that this action reflects the strength and commitment of their trading relationships.

Trump added that despite having a significant trade deficit, the United States has decided to move forward but only with more balanced and fair trade.

He said should any country decide to raise their tariffs, whatever number they choose will be added to the percentage the U.S. has charged.

More deals are expected to be announced later on Wednesday.
