The State Department is condemning Iran over its alleged harassment of a British oil tanker as tensions rise in the Persian Gulf. On Thursday, State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus commended the actions of Britain’s Royal Navy in ensuring freedom of navigation.

“We will continue to work closely with the United Kingdom and our allies to ensure the Iranian regime’s malign activities do not further disrupt international law, maritime security or global commerce,” stated Ortagus.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard denied any incident had occurred, saying if it had received orders to seize any ship then it would have done so immediately.

The United Kingdom said President Trump’s offer to meet with the Iranians without preconditions to seek a diplomatic solution still stands.
