Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to New York to meet with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Friday. The two were expected to discuss a broad range of topics, including how to handle Iran’s apparent refusal to cooperate with UN nuclear inspectors.
“We need a world without nuclear weapons, now more than ever,” stated Guterres. “The 50th anniversary of the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons is an opportunity to strengthen international peace and security through the elimination of nuclear weapons.”

On Thursday, Pompeo urged the UN Security Council to renew the arms embargo on Iran before it expires in October. He also called out the country for failing to declare nuclear material.
“Given Iran’s prior covert nuclear weapons program and its ignominious record of duplicity, any undeclared nuclear material activity in Iran is an extremely serious matter. The United States remains committed to denying Iran any pathway to a nuclear weapon. In light of Iran’s nuclear weapons program, it is imperative that Iran verifiably demonstrate that it has permanently abandoned all of its previous work.”

Iran has reportedly crossed the limit for the amount of uranium it’s allowed to have under the 2015 nuclear deal. Reports also claimed the country has denied inspectors access to several potential nuclear sites.
New @IAEAorg reports raise serious concerns about Iran’s compliance with NPT-required safeguards obligations. The international community should be clear that #Iran must immediately provide the IAEA full cooperation regarding potential hidden nuclear material or activities.
