In what could be the future filling in for the past, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi temporarily conceded her power to a dynamic freshman lawmaker.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez briefly grabbed the gavel to preside over the House on Friday, making her the youngest woman ever to do so. The 29-year-old took the role for roughly an hour as part of a routine rotation of House members.
The New York congresswoman presided over so-called “special orders” in which lawmakers discuss business in their home districts after most legislative matters are complete.
Speaker Pelosi and Ocasio-Cortez have often been at odds as of recently, primarily on policy issues and progressive’s calls for impeachment. Despite some occasional jabs, the two lawmakers maintain they are allies on Capitol Hill.
