Iran has confirmed it has arrested a U.S. military veteran, who has been held in custody for months.

Iranian state media made the announcement Wednesday, saying 46-year-old Navy veteran Michael White was detained in July on unspecified charges.

According to reports, White was in the city of Mashhad visiting his girlfriend at the time of his arrest.

His detention could add to the tensions between the U.S. and Iran as the Islamic Republic is already holding several other Americans on accusations of espionage.

Back in 2017, President Trump warned he would impose serious consequences on Tehran if it continued to unjustly detain U.S. citizens.
