Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is calling for the abolishment of the electoral college.
In Thursday’s Town Hall hosted by the League of United Latin American Citizens, the Vermont senator explained his position by citing the Democrat Party’s loss in the 2016 elections.
“It is hard to defend a system in which we have the president, who lost the popular vote by three million votes,” he stated.
Sanders is joining a growing trend of presidential hopefuls calling for the abolishment of the electoral college. Their position has drawn sharp criticism from President Trump, who says the popular vote would give more power to large cities and states to decide the election.
