An illegal immigrant accused of shooting Kate Steinle to death on pier in the sanctuary city of San Francisco is found not guilty of murder or manslaughter.
The verdict was announced on Thursday, nearly a week after the jury began deliberating.
The same jury did find Jose Garcia Zarate guilty of possessing a firearm as a felon. His lawyers argued it was an accident.
Zarate was accused of finding a stolen gun on using it to shoot the 32-year-old woman while she was walking with her father in 2015.
The defendant had been freed from jail shortly before the shooting despite a federal request to hold him for deportation.
