Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. amid heightened tensions between the two nations.
On Tuesday, Tillerson met with Anatoly Antonov to discuss possible steps to improve mutual relations between the countries.
Both sides pledged a full implementation of the Minsk agreements — a cease-fire between Ukraine and Russia — in an attempt to restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
The two also discussed the North Korean threat as well as defeating the Islamic State.
Additionally, Tillerson stressed the U.S. is committed to the Geneva talks in Syria, adding it’s the best way toward a political solution to the Syrian conflict.
The meeting comes just one day after charges against former Trump campaign officials were declared by Special Counsel Robert Mueller in relation to the federal Russia probe.
Both President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have denied any collusion during the last presidential election.
Meetings with foreign officials are regular and common for Secretary Tillerson.
