American media outlets may soon be required to register as foreign agents in Russia.
According to reports, Russia is looking to adopt measures that would place restrictions on U.S. journalists and censor news organizations on social media.
Under the possible changes, Russia would consider American media companies as agents seeking to meddle into the country’s affairs.
This comes after the Department of Justice ordered the Russian news outlet RT America to register as a foreign agent.
RT is being investigated by Congress for possible election meddling in the 2016 presidential race.
They are also suspected to have Sputnik influence with Kremlin propaganda.
U.S. media outlets could reportedly be targeted in response to the DOJ’s request as early as next week.
CNN and Radio Liberty are among those to be singled out, according to Russian officials.
