President Trump signed a proclamation honoring Martin Luther King Junior Day.

The president officially commemorated the holiday at the White House Friday, and praised the civil rights icon.

During his speech, the president hailed King as a ‘Great American hero,’ whose life changed the course of human history.

He went on to describe King as someone who lifted the conscious of the nation, and helped us all recognize the dignity in every person.

The president commended the reverend’s courage to stand up for his fellow Americans.

“Today we celebrate Dr. King for standing up for the self evident truth Americans hold so dear that no matter the color of our skin or the place of our birth we are created equal by god,” stated President Trump.

In further emphasizing the civil rights leader’s lasting impact, the president said his words and vision only grow stronger as time goes by.

President Trump concluded his remarks by encouraging Americans to do acts of civic work, or serve their communities to honor the legacy of Dr. King.

I already shut down for the evening, but then I thought about all this racial thing that we live with everyday and what the Reverend Martin Luther King spent most of his life trying to make better. It just bothers me so much that I have to talk about it, or I’ll go crazy.

Both races have to find some middle ground. We have to bring these grievances out in the open and talk about them. We simply have to do that. There is nothing that keeps us apart that can’t be talked about in an open forum like this one.
I’ll start. I love most black Americans. I grew up in Tennessee on a cotton farm.
Best human beings I ever knew. Good, honest people. People of the land, itself.

The way Obama spent all of his time turning us against each other sickened me. I hate him to this day for doing that to our great country. Because he had no business doing that, and he knew it.

We are one country and we are one people. I think we need to start acting like it.
I believe that was the message that Dr. Martin Luther King tried to put out there.
God Bless the man. He died for what he believed in. How many of us do that?

  • PatrickJ

By any standard you want to use, the Reverend Martin Luther King was a great man. I probably shouldn’t say this, but I have this haunting feeling that he knew he was about to be killed.

Great man that he was, he was ready for it. He actually accepted his own death for what he believed in.

Please don’t respond to this comment. Because I didn’t want a response when I typed it. This comment was only meant for the Reverend Martin Luther King and his immediate family.

  • michaelparsons

Martin left us way too soon. He had so much to teach all of us.

  • iwontell

    WHY?
Another PAID HOLIDAY for the MORONS?
How about a REAGAN DAY for instance?

    • PatrickJ

I won’t support any comment on this site that degrades what Martin Luther King tried to do. The Reverend was to racial inequality what Donald Trump is to the attempt by the left to destroy the principles this nation was built upon.

To me, the two are inseparable.

      • …remain calm and return fire

I survived MLK’s reign of terror…he’s no hero to me… MLK marched and things burned…race riots broke out and I was on the front line…

        • PatrickJ

No problem. I understand. It was a very emotional time.

          • …remain calm and return fire

No problem, thanks for the patronizing and diminishing response.

I’m not your enemy. I’m just the guy next door.

I won’t take that bait. I appreciate your comments and I appreciate the fact that you are here and are part ot the conversation.

  • Twinkle Toes

There are thousands of respectable people who’s actions were/are admirable, regardless of the color of their skin.

This business about honoring people just because of the color of their skin promotes racism. Secondly, the ONLY person I honor is Jesus Christ. Anyone else would be idolatry.

  • BNG66

Just ask for the FBI tapes

  • BNG66

Does this “honor ” include the drugs ..drinking and hookers MLK enjoyed?…

  • All American

Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. was a true Conservative activist.
Rev King gave All Americans a clear message of hope via non violent activism, Faith and reverence for God.
He was neither Democrat or Republican stating neither were the party of Almighty God.

  • Shane Norkus

    Why?

What did the plagiarizer do other than give one memorable speech, which I happened to agree with?

Martin Luther King, Jr., was a communist, preferred the company of trashy white women rather than his wife and bought into Margaret Sanger’s vision for minorities, which she called ‘human weeds’ that should be eradicated.

Why does this man even have a national holiday? What great things did he accomplish? One speech which congressional negroes, and negroes in general, have bastardized and turned on its ear.

  • internettoughguy

Donald Trump is a racist scumbag who besmirched Dr. King’s memory by signing this proclamation.

    • Numerical Logic

      How?

      • All American

        Block him👍🏻

          Probably will do.

    • MJABRTDK

You’re the typical DemocRat. President Trump on behalf of the nation gives a outstanding speech to honor the legacy of MLK and you turn it into another Democrat race card issue … the problem with America is Democrats like you.

  • Stonecrusher

A special proclamation? MLK has a national holiday in his honor and entry to national parks will be free. What more is needed?

Emma Lasarus’ sonnet that contained the phrase on the Statue of Liberty was put there after the basis of the present laws of immigration were established by Congress in 1882, and those laws are what legal immigrants must abide by in order to enter this Country; they must be self sufficient, or have a sponsor to support them, and must not become wards of the State.!!
The rediculous practices of putting immigrants, legal or illegal on the Government dole, at the expense of it citizens, or allowing illegal aliens to work, is no less than subversion by those who would destroy this Country.!!!

MLK would be ashamed of the democrat party! Democrats don’t know what content of character is,,, and insist on enslaving minorities and illegals to their commie agenda!

MLK: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character”

    • katie1111

Dr King was not affiliated with any political party but he did have some pretty disparaging things to say about Republicans. “King was not a partisan and never endorsed any political candidate. In a 1958 interview, King said “I don’t think the Republican party is a party full of the almighty God nor is the Democratic party. They both have weaknesses … And I’m not inextricably bound to either party.”

King did, however, weigh in on the Republican party during his lifetime. In Chapter 23 of his autobiography, King writes this about the 1964 Republican National Convention:

The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism. All people of goodwill viewed with alarm and concern the frenzied wedding at the Cow Palace of the KKK with the radical right. The “best man” at this ceremony was a senator whose voting record, philosophy, and program were anathema to all the hard-won achievements of the past decade.”

That sounds to me like someone who was ashamed of the Republican Party. Maybe you should do your own research before deciding who someone would be ashamed of.

      • All American

Founded in 1866, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) extended into almost every southern state by 1870 and became a vehicle for white southern resistance to the Republican Party’s Reconstruction-era ..

      • ReaganKnewBest

Looks like King didn’t pay attention in his history class.

      • Tim maher

Really? The KKK was an outgrowth and branch of the democrat party.

        • CASSY IS SASSY

And the BLM is just the KKK with a TAN.

        • Atikva

That’s right. The whole South was Democrat before, during and after the Civil War. It’s only a few decades ago that the Southerners, having noticed that the Democrat Party had turned into the Socialist Party, abandoned it and became Republicans. As for the Yankees, they still are blind as bats and haven’t noticed anything.

    • Sane_Person37

MLK was no saint, but his non-violence stance was historical and praise-worthy. But do we need to have an event in the Oval office over it? MLK day is the 3rd Monday every January. All the feds and many union people are off, and the markets are closed. Isn’t that enough of a reminder?

      • Cajunmama Debbie

        No it is not enough.
MLK was a pastor 1st & he believed what the bible / Jesus said. And he was took more than just a non-violent stance… MLK took the mindset of loving your neighbor (showing respect to others), leadership by serving (putting others before self) & other concepts & put them into action as well as encouraging others to do good!
When someone stands out because he/she lived according to principals such as these & knowing that he was a target… (many died for just their skin color or for being kind to people of color), it should be more than just commended. The reason why the person is considered a Hero must be shared so that people will hopefully try to follow the mindset of this person when facing overwhelming obstacles.
        * And lest you forget, MLK knowing that he was a target, just as our U.S. military personnel realize that their lives are in danger, here or abroad, MLK ended up making the ultimate sacrifice… And he did not put himself in danger just for some cause. MLK lived & died to promote to all people the ideals & principals that are key to the heart of Christianity – Love, Peace, Freedom, Compassion, Courageousness, Sacrifice, etc. This man’s life is to be celebrated, thus we use his birthday as the day to honor him.

        • Sane_Person37

Do you know of anyone else who fits this category that should be honored by an event in the Oval office each year?

      • Robert Sigler

It was a knee jerk reaction to his assassination.

      • PatrickJ

Dr. King studied Ghandi and used the same principles.

        • Sane_Person37

It’s really too bad the democrats are intent and work hard to keep racism alive. Racism was all but dead in the 1970’s. I’ll testify to that, I lived in Pittsburgh then which is had/has a very black population. We got along great.

    • Ed L

Dr King was a lifelong Republican and gun owner

      • Diane Coto

I didn’t know that. My family had all been democrats but that was back in the day when dems had some common sense, like JFK did.

    • CASSY IS SASSY

MLK has been “TURNING IN HIS GRAVE” so much as of the past 8 years alone…That he he has turned into a, Tunnel Boring Machine.
What has happened to America has NOTHING to do with his Dream..more like his Nightmare!
And we can all thank the first black president for dividing and destroying everything that MLK and others…DIED for.

      • iwontell

Well the last 8 years was a NIGHTMARE……….

    • andrew Befano

Marin Luther King was a Republican. He recognized that the Democrats were and always would be the party of Racism and Division from their hard core stance to keep people under the thumb of physical slavery to keeping people under the governments thumb through monetary slavery.

I’ll second that. Lee was one of the most honorable men in our history, unlike King, who was very good at one thing…rabble rousing.
