The Defense Department is calling for greater nuclear capabilities, in an attempt to counter Russia’s growing nuclear arsenal.
The Department of Defense unveiled its new policy Friday, calling for smaller, low-yield nuclear weapons to deter Russia.
The move attempts to challenge the perception that U.S. nuclear weapons are too big to be used, and therefore are no longer an effective deterrent.
The nuclear review by the Pentagon is the first in eight years, and takes a new approach toward North Korea, China, and Iran.
President Trump praised the new policy Friday, following months of analysis he ordered last year.
