LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The president of the group that hands out the annual Oscars declared on Monday that some of the worst abuses in the movie industry were finally being “jack-hammered into oblivion.”

John Bailey, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, told more than 200 Oscar nominees that the Academy was working hard toward a greater diversity.

The Oscars, the highest honors in the movie business, have been criticized in recent years for excluding people of color from nominations. In response to the #OscarsSoWhite social media campaign, it has broadened its white, old and male-dominated membership to invite more women and people of color into its 8,000-strong ranks.

Addressing the class of 2018 nominees at an annual luncheon, Bailey said the 90-year-old Academy was reinventing itself with programs committed to inclusion and diversity “in today’s era of a greater awareness and responsibility in balancing gender, race, ethnicity and religion.’

As a 75-year old white man, Bailey said he was gratified that “the fossilized bedrock of many of Hollywood’s worst abuses are being jack-hammered into oblivion.”

Nominees for this year’s Oscars, to be handed out in March, include female director Greta Gerwig and African-American director Jordan Peele, Rachel Morrison as the first Oscar-nominated female cinematographer, four black actors, and movies that range from female-driven stories to romantic fantasy, war films and contemporary reflections on race.

Bailey did not directly refer to the sexual misconduct scandal that has jolted Hollywood and led to dozens of actors, directors, producers and agents being fired, forced to step down or dropped from creative projects.

The Hollywood awards season has consequently been dominated by passionate speeches about female empowerment, calls for equal pay and better opportunities for women in front of and behind the camera, and solidarity with victims of sexual harassment.

The Oscar winners are voted on by the 8,000 members of the Academy of Motion Pictures and will be handed out at a ceremony in Hollywood on March 4.

  1. how much more irrelevant can the Academy become?

  2. The “o”scars are a mental masturbation exercise conducted by a crowd of folks that know all to well how to perform even more perverse acts with & to each other.

hollywood has always been a irrational self-serving environment that lives on the outer reaches of humanity and thinks their lifestyles should define how the rest of us should live.

Of course, this says nothing about the underage children that line the hollywood streets waiting for movie stars and hollywood moguls to pick them up for a night of personal entertainment while those very children work to be “discovered!”

Sad universe this hollywood is but only proves what excess does to the human mind and is further proven by the likes of what befell Jackson, Prince, & Presley along with many others who were lost to hollywood’s spell!

Sad, truly sad state of affairs but as the story states: at least one 75 year old [hollywood] white man, Bailey said he is gratified!?!

Apparently the Oscars have went Global and are no longer a US oriented award. So then they should present the awards from other countries. Since their popularity in the US has decreased quite a bit they should pander to other countries populace that likes their globalist garbage. Sweden comes to mind, a Matriarchal run government that allows foreign men to molest their native women.

  4. So the notion is that we all tune in for diversity, rather than entertainment?

How about instead of concentrating on that, they find some folks to write original stories and music? I’d love it if they stopped peddling retreads.

  5. Sure, they have been doing it for almost 100 years now, but they are going to stop this instant. And I have a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell you. There is a reason they call it a “casting couch”.

This is just the type of policy, we the consumers, dislike the most. There is no reason for affirmative action in the Oscars just as there is no reason for affirmative action in most of the rest of the country or it’s culture.

  7. Interesting choice of words jackhammered is.

A knee-jerk reaction that may result in some fairness toward diversity short-term, but in the end poses a long-term risk to the once merit based awards. In a few years, ingrained artificial diversity will make the Oscars irrelevant and useless. Diversity needs to be fostered from the ground up, not imposed from the top down.

In related news, the NBA commissioner reported that they will be taking active steps to address the problem of white basketball players not getting the MVP enough.

    Oh, wait….

I would think the things they are talking about now, should have been in their DNA from the get go. Art requires a space to grow in, but then again the artist has to realize that if he needs to make money out of his art, there could be compromises.

  11. yeh, sure they are. just like there is no longer any ‘blacklisting’ of conservative actresses and actors…- right up there with awards based on ‘race & gender’ concerns…these people have finally, hopelessly – run themselves into an utterly delusional state of mind…

    Gibs me gold man statue……

  13. hollywood, so irrelevant …but of play actors…playing make US believe

Lowering the bar for quality is NOT diversity.

  15. Who gives a @#$% what the Oscars do anyways lol they are worthless in my book along with all the hollyweirdos.

  16. WrathMaster | February 6, 2018 at 1:53 pm |

SOme how I think he’s wrong. Hwood really messed up, like libs in general, and we are not feeling charitable any more.

  17. right, diversity teaches that only the color of skin/sexual orientation/perceived gender matter NOT the content of ones character.

Who gives a schitt what any of them think.

There is no talent in hollyweed, only plagiarism, discrimination, and lies. They all deserve each other. Perhaps they can all join Madeline Albright in her “special place”

Read books and get your mind candy going the right way.

  19. What happened to choosing someone who is the most talented? These kind of things just fan the flames of racism! I don’t care what COLOR you are, or what GENDER you are, just do a great job of acting and you should be the winner or at least receive a high acknowledgement. This PC crap is why I don’t watch tv or movies like I used to. (I definitely don’t watch Grammys, emmys, etc)

    • This Bull Rocks | February 6, 2018 at 6:09 pm |

which is why I got rid of my tv – perfect…can choose on the internet what i want to watch – mostly alternative news and documentaries

I can sum up this whole perverted body 8000 members….WHO CARES?????. A wasteful group of pathetic loosers

It’s been a while since Oscar was given to the best. Just look at that actress who won it in 2014, I think. Lupina or something similar. Daughter of a Kenyan politician, a bit of acting in Kenya, comes to America and wins Oscar. Funny, that we have not seen her in any major successful role ever since.

  22. “John Bailey, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, told more than 200 Oscar nominees that the Academy was working hard toward a greater diversity.”

So apparently the 8,000 voters are now being sold the bag of magic beans called “affirmative action”

There needs to be more North Koreans actors awarded Oscars #NoKoOscars

  25. The Oscars are a sham.

  26. semperfipar | February 6, 2018 at 4:03 am |

Let’s see….If anything people of color are over represented in Hollywood based on percentage of population. Hollywood will not change and the people that run it are some of the biggest racists on the planet.

  27. I think he meant “pounded” into Oblivion, whoever that is.

Only a fool thinks that the Hollywierd culture is gonna change anytime soon.

When there are millions to be made, dignity will be bought and sold. There is a reason that prostitution, legal or illegal, is the world’s oldest profession. I don’t think turning Oscar into a participation trophy is gonna change that.

    • He is just appeasing the PC police so he can try to keep the peace and his job. Nothing will change in Hoggywood. Same old racist, bigoted Liberal idiots as always.

  28. Political correctness rearing it’s ugly head here.

  29. I think it should be more balanced!!!we need 1 gay award. But since bix-sexuals atent really gay we need one of them. But then i guess we need one for transgendered because they may or may not be gay. We need another one for blacks, latinos asians and to be fair others.we need one for those who are physically disabled and one for the mentally impaired. Ih heck lets give them all gold stars for trying!

  31. ...remain calm and return fire | February 5, 2018 at 7:03 pm |

communists have been trying to ‘jack hammer’ human nature for 100 years, it doesn’t work you fool……..people need to stop trading their souls to perverts for fame and fortune…..

  32. Jack Woodburn | February 5, 2018 at 5:58 pm |

So the Academy now has to engage in Affirmative Action instead of artistic merit…just like the racial and sexual reverse discrimination in the rest of the American business world…
