A top NATO official said he supports the idea of a world without nuclear weapons, but says a ban by the United Nations won’t help accomplish that goal.
The words by Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg came during a security conference in Sweden on Sunday as he discussed ridding the world of nuclear weapons.
The secretary general added, the goal could only be accomplished by a disarmament of NATO countries, which would be meaningless if countries like China and Russia kept their weapons.
His comments were presumably directed to the Swedish government as they remain divided on whether to sign a United Nations treaty on disarmament.
The Swedish government remains divided on the issue.
