The illegal immigrant and seven-time felon who fatally shot Kate Steinle is sentenced to three years in prison, but credited for time served.
45-year-old Jose Garcia-Zarate was acquitted in the 2015 murder of Steinle, but was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
A California judge sentenced Zarate on that weapons charge Friday.
Garcia-Zarate will be on parole for four years and remain in custody to face federal charges.
The case sparked national controversy over sanctuary city policies, which allowed the five-time deportee to be released from prison – after serving time for a marijuana charge prior to the killing.
