JERUSALEM/GAZA (Reuters) – The Islamist group Hamas urged Palestinians on Thursday to abandon peace efforts and launch a new uprising against Israel in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as its capital.

Palestinian factions called for a “Day of Rage” on Friday, and a wave of protest in the West Bank and Gaza on Thursday brought clashes between Palestinians and Israeli troops. At least 31 people were wounded by Israeli gunfire and rubber bullets, medics said.

The Israeli military said an aircraft and a tank had targeted two posts belonging to militants in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip after three rockets were launched at Israel.

A jihadist Salafi group in Gaza called the Al-Tawheed Brigades – which does not heed the call from the enclave’s dominant force, Hamas, to desist from firing rockets – claimed responsibility for the launches.

The military said it was reinforcing troops in the occupied West Bank.

Some protesters threw rocks at soldiers and others chanted: “Death to America! Death to the fool Trump!”

Trump reversed decades of U.S. policy on Wednesday by recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, angering the Arab world and upsetting Western allies.

The status of Jerusalem, home to sites considered holy to Muslims, Jews and Christians, is one of the biggest obstacles to a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.

“We should call for and we should work on launching an intifada (Palestinian uprising) in the face of the Zionist enemy,” Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said in a speech in Gaza.

On Friday’s “Day of Rage,” rallies and protests are expected near Israeli-controlled checkpoints in the West Bank and along the border with Gaza.

Friday prayers at the Muslim shrine of Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem could also be a flashpoint.

Naser Al-Qidwa, an aide to Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and senior official in his Fatah party, urged Palestinians to stage peaceful protests.

Abbas on Thursday met Jordan’s King Abdullah, whose dynasty is the traditional custodian of Jerusalem’s holy places. Jordan is a staunch U.S. ally but has dismissed Trump’s move as “legally null”.

Israel considers Jerusalem its eternal and indivisible capital. Palestinians want the capital of an independent state of their own to be in the city’s eastern sector, which Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed in a move never recognised internationally. No other country has its embassy there.

U.S. officials told Reuters that when Trump forewarned the Palestinian president of his intention to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, he assured him that a peace plan being put together would please the Palestinians.

Trump’s decision has raised doubts about his administration’s ability to follow through on the peace effort that his son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, has led for months aimed at reviving long-stalled negotiations.

Israeli Housing Minister Yoav Gallant said he would next week bring to the Cabinet for approval 14,000 housing units, some 6,000 of which are slated for construction in areas in Arab East Jerusalem and are already at various planning stages.

“Following President Trump’s historic declaration, I intend to promote and reinforce building in Jerusalem,” Gallant said in a statement.

TRUMP ‘IMMORTALISED’

Trump said on Wednesday that his administration would begin a process of moving the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a step expected to take years and which his predecessors had opted not to take in order to avoid inflaming tensions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed Trump’s announcement as a “historic landmark” and said many countries would follow the U.S. move and contacts were under way. He did not name the countries. The White House said it was not aware of any other country that planned to follow Trump’s lead.

“President Trump has immortalised himself in the chronicles of our capital. His name will now be held aloft, alongside other names connected to the glorious history of Jerusalem and of our people,” he said in a speech at Israel’s Foreign Ministry.

Close Western allies of Washington, including France and Britain, have been critical of Trump’s move.

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, said Jerusalem must be the capital of both Israel and a future Palestinian state.

A senior Palestinian official with Fatah said that U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, due to visit the region later this month, was “unwelcome in Palestine.”

A spokesman for Pence said the vice president was planning to meet Abbas on the trip.

Deputy Palestinian U.N. envoy Feda Abdelhady-Nasser complained to the U.N. Security Council late on Wednesday about Trump’s decision. The Security Council is likely to meet on Friday.

Haniyeh called on Abbas to withdraw from peacemaking with Israel and on Arabs to boycott the Trump administration. Abbas said on Wednesday the United States had abdicated its role as a mediator in peace efforts.

“We have given instruction to all Hamas members and to all its wings to be fully ready for any new instructions or orders that may be given to confront this strategic danger that threatens Jerusalem and threatens Palestine,” Haniyeh said.

BACKLASH EXPECTED

Israel and the United States consider Hamas, which has fought three wars with Israel since 2007, a terrorist organisation. Hamas does not recognise Israel’s right to exist and its suicide bombings helped spearhead the last intifada, from 2000 to 2005.

Fearing disruption to reconciliation efforts between Hamas and Fatah, Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Al-Hamdallah and other Fatah delegates arrived in Gaza on Thursday to meet Hamas.

Trump said his move, which fulfilled a campaign promise, was not intended to tip the scales in favour of Israel and that any deal involving the future of Jerusalem would have to be negotiated by the parties. But the move was seen almost uniformly in Arab capitals as a sharp tilt towards Israel.

The United States is asking Israel to temper its response to the announcement because Washington expects a backlash and is weighing the potential threat to U.S. facilities and people, according to a State Department document seen by Reuters.

In Lebanon, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah backed calls for a new intafada and said: “We are facing blatant American aggression.”

Islamist militant group Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula said Trump’s decision was the result of “normalisation steps” between some Gulf Arab countries and Israel.

Protests have broken out since Trump’s announcement in Jordan, outside the U.S. consulate in Istanbul and in Pakistan. Thousands of Tunisians protested in several cities on Thursday.

Time to throw these Philistines out of Jerusalem completely!

  • MAGA woman

Do they just go looking for reasons to riot and kill people? Thank

So the terrorist group Hamas wants to be seen as a real political party and many Nations capitulated including the U.S. until recent times. But yet, they still act like terrorists. With all of the hand holding prior Presidents have done with the Muslim world, me fears that we will have to resolve the same way we did previously with the Barbary Coast Pirates to correct the situation.

Hamas is not very smart in choosing to poke the bear. By “bear” I mean Israel, not Trump.

Muslims are deceivers because Allah gave the Holy Land to Israel in the Qur’an.

    – Allah prefers the children of Israel above other people. Qur’an 2:47 “O children of Israel, remember my grace which I graced on you, and I preferred you above the worlds.“

    – Allah favors the children of Israel. Qur’an 46:16 “And indeed, we gave the book and the wisdom and the prophethood to the children of Israel, and we provided them with the good things. And we favored them above the worlds.“

    – Allah desires for Israel to have their own land. Qur’an 17:103-104 “So he[pharaoh] desired to expel them out of the land, so we drowned him and all those that were with him. And we said after him to the children of Israel, ‘Dwell in the land, so when the promise of the hereafter comes to pass, we bring you all together.’ “

    – Allah assigns the Holy Land to the children of Israel. Qur’an 5:20-23 “And when Moses said to his people[children of Israel], ‘O my people, remember the grace of Allah on you when he made prophets among you. And he made you kings, and he gave you what he did not give anyone of the world. O my people, enter the holy land which Allah has prescribed for you, and do not turn away your backs so you will be turned back losers…’“

Hamas is a radical Palestinian militant movement that started in 1987 and are designated a terrorist group by most of the free world.
They are an offshoot of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood.
In 2006 Hamas won the Palestinian legislative elections and assumed administrative control of Gaza Strip and West Bank. They have bred destruction and disruption ever since.

  • DrMitoFit

There is a modern and secure US Consulate compound in Jerusalem that is ready to be named the new US embassy. Just needs a new sign over the door. Recognizing the true capital of Israel is just the first bold step in Trump’s chess match to gain the “ultimate deal”: US-negotiated Mideast peace. He is strategizing at a level the Dems cannot comprehend.

Yes he did, and he also supported the Muslim Brotherhood uprising in Egypt and armed them with M1A1’s and F-16;s. He also turned a deaf ear to the people of Iran.

This move by Trump was incited by Obama almost forced if anyone ever wants peace in the region. Obama wanted to get back at Netenyahu (sorry, most likely spelled wrong) and cause trouble for Trump. He did not veto a UN Security Counsel article that Stated Israel is in violation of laws for occupying Jerusalem and put the recognized boarders back to pre-1967 that were indefensible. Either out of spite or he secretly wants Hebrews to no longer ‘occupy’ Israel. The motion removed just about all of Israels cards from the negotiating table, and this only evens the hand.

  • Tom

I am so sick of these people that celebrate the killing of innocent people demanding their rights. They were kicked out of Jordan because they tried to partition part of that country. A nomadic people that wish to now claim land because the are no longer wanted or tolerated anywhere else I find fitting. If their children suffer it’s because of the twisted sick minds of their parents that have nothing but hatred and bigotry in their hearts.

    • Tango Uniform

Palestinians were offered the opportunity to have a homeland in 1948, but focused their energy on denying Israel. Now, instead of creating a civilization, they build tunnels and launch rockets. If it walks like a muzzie and talks like a muzzie, double tap it.

  • Dr Food

For decades the cowardly politicians from both sides of the aisle remained silent on this issue using the easy way out by referring to what is now known as “a two State solution” yet, nowhere can be found any officially formed State of an independent Palestine. In Biblical times Palestine was referred to as Canaan aka Israel.

Politicians, including one that should not be involved in politics (The Roman Catholic Pope) continuously argue peace will only exist when the two parties agree. Hello! The two parties have not and will not agree…ever.

Although the international community will pounce on President Trump’s acknowledgement of Jerusalem as Israel’s Capitol, I am hopeful this bold and, hopefully, strategic decision will move the peace process forward as it will be in the Arabs best interest to do so.

Or should I say, “I pray it will have that result”.

Negotiating with Hamas and their ilk has proven fruitless as they simply do not want peace. It appears that from their perspective, peace will only exist when all Jews are eliminated. Not a good outcome for Israel.

    I could be wrong.

    • Jenny O

You’re not wrong. Rather, you outlined the situation quite aptly.

  • Pezgun

This article might well be titled “How to create a target rich enviornment.” Palestine is popuated by transplants and is nothing more than a stick in the Globalists hands to torment Isreal. Were they smart, they would establish their borders within the lands they currently control and make peace. They’re not smart.

Why are we shilling for the Jew’s and Israel? The only good this does is drive a wedge between the US and Muslims. Maybe this will turn all whites against Muslims and we can finally take Europe back after years of Muslim invasion.

Mr. Obama for the term of his office, advanced and advocated peaceful Islam agenda which is his heritage. This caused the Jewish-Christian hackles to spike up.Now, Trump is doing the same thing.. advancing and advocating his Jewish-Christian heritage agenda also causing the same result among the Islamic cause. We all cannot just stand on the sideline and be an observer… we need to be proactive and take side. For me, I’m seriously taking the side of John Lennon…”imagine”…

    • kaiju

Lennon was a peaceful person as most liberals are. What they fail to understand though is that there are plenty of non-peaceful people who will hijack their good intentions to make war with everything that is good and right. It’s why socialism and communism fail every time. The only way they survive for any time is by ruthless force.

      • RfromTx

Christians, Jews, Islam… all three religions are the most violent religions that ever evolved in human history.

      • Andrew Moore8

Yea…the Las Vegas shooter was a real peaceful libtard now wasn’t he….

    • Todo

John Lennon was saying, “imagine if there were no religion”, whatsoever. That would be great but it isn’t even close to reality. I don’t know how you would be taking a “side” just by wishing religion didn’t exist. I mean, we all wish for peace but that’s not the reality we are having to deal with.

      • RfromTx

the other alternatives?… like total elimination of opposing religious belief? is that the reality you’re siding with to have lasting peace?not even close to reality either.

        • Todo

I can’t argue with that. I certainly don’t think bombing each other is going to help. Neither will throwing rocks at walls. The radical Muslim goal seems to be the total eradication of anyone that doesn’t think like them. Rational people can’t be on that side…at least the Jewish people don’t want to go any further than Israel and Jerusalem. Again, I could care less about either one of their religions surviving but when it comes down to the safety of the citizens of the world…I think the Jews are a much lesser evil. Just my opinion

          • RfromTx

nicely stated…thank you. May I add the radical Muslims as well as the radical Christians and radical Jews at just a fraction of the whole citizens of the world.

          • Using the term radical for muslims is misleading. If you go by their basic beliefs, muslims want death to everyone that denies their faith. If you go by the basic teachings of Christianity, we are to love everybody, regardless of their beliefs.

          • RfromTx

Not sure how you got to conclusion about the basic belief of the Muslims or Islam… If that is near the truth, I should not be here at all after spending so much time in a predominantly Islamic country… according to you I should have been exterminated per Muslims basic belief. I’ve been to their homes, even places of worship. I have had heated discussions regarding why Christians “worships Jesus” instead of Mohammad and I never felt threatened by any of them. Their main belief revolves the around the five Pillars of Islam : Shahada (Declaration of Faith), Shalat (obligatory prayer–once each day at around 6PM facing in the direction of Mecca), Zakat (charity), Sawn (fasting) and Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca). There is no belief regarding death to non believer like the Christian God of the Old testament.
