French President Emanuel Macron promises nearly $60 million in aid towards French Caribbean islands devastated by Hurricane Irma.
France’s leader pledged the support Tuesday after landing on the island of Saint Martin.
This comes after the, then category five, hurricane made landfall last week.
Officials report at least 11 people were killed in Saint Martin as a result of the hurricane.
France, the U.K., and the Netherlands have recently come under fire as some say the European countries have been slow to aid their territories in the Caribbean.
Macron has since denied the claims insisting that rebuilding the island is France’s “top priority.”
In addition to financial aid, Macron has also mobilized 2,000 security forces, including his country’s army to help island residents rebuild.
