DHS Secy: The U.S. is Taking All Steps to Prepare for N. Korean Threat

January 3, 2018
OAN Newsroom

The Homeland Security secretary says the U.S. is taking all steps to prepare for any threat from North Korea.

This comes after Kim Jong Un said he has a button to launch a strike on the U.S.

In response on Twitter, President Trump said he has a much bigger and more powerful button that works.

Kirstjen Nielsen responded to reporter’s questions Tuesday about President Trump’s tweet mocking Kim.

Homeland Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen listens during an interview Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, in San Diego. Nielsen told The Associated Press that the administration doesn’t endorse citizenship for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program but that it would consider legislation that Congress passes.(AP Photo/Gregory Bull)

“The President speaks for himself…I think we have to continue, as he said, to take the threat from North Korea very seriously, said Secretary Nielsen. “Certainly at DHS we’re doing all we can to prepare for any possible scenario that would involve the homeland, whether it be from North Korea or any other nation state or terrorist adversary.”

North Korea is reportedly preparing to conduct another intercontinental ballistic missile.

Liberals, so why is it ok for NK to constantly threaten us, but when Trump stands up for us, you all have hissy fits and somehow make it about sexual inadequacies. Kim Jong himself said “it’s reality, not a threat” well same goes for POTUS statements….”it’s reality, not a threat” that we do have a bigger, stronger button that works !!

  • Glenda Hammer

Liberals can’t stand it because Trump is standing up to this little worm unlike our former presidents, who allowed him to walk all over them, with his threats.
NK is in such trouble that they’re giving their soldiers leave, to find food because Kim’s people, including soldiers, are starving to death while he’s setting off missiles.

    • SlowpokeSA

      …and hitting his own cities!

  • landwell

Those are key components of national security.

  • jferal

Liberal South Koreans and their newly elected liberal leader wants to give the North more time to perfect their Nukes with useless talks that Kim has used for the last 30 years to buy time and get his way. I say, pull out of the South. Pull back to Japan where they do comprehend reality. Let’s see how the dilutional liberal South Koreans like living under the Kim regime.

  • Brad

Didn’t that little thug drop a missile on his own countryman a while back? Maybe we need to work that angle and see if that little fart will self destruct his country and make it glow in the dark.

  • SaidNO2Liberalism

Deport All Criminal Aliens. That’s how DACA is done!

to heck with the wall, build that ‘star wars’ missile defense system someone suggested some years ago….

  • Rufus Firefly

Trump is every bit the dullard described by many of his staff and long-time acquaintances. Trump thinks he is “leading” while sitting in his bed eating cheeseburgers and schmoozing with his pals on the phone. Chauncey Gardner would be a more competent and less dangerous *president. Trump is our first Dunning-Kruger *president, but is inexplicably worshiped by his deplorable followers..

  • badass

Actually the Rats’ threat to our great country is way more serious than NK. 48 Rats vote none to the tax cut bills, 58 Aholes didn’t attend the president inauguration ceremony.
and most of the liberals are commie…..they’re waiting for free handouts, more welfare…..

    • Tom Hanlon

Pure scumbags, the whole lot of them.

  • Arnold Maize

Reinstate the DRAFT. That ought to get the little snowflakes panties in a bunch!

    • Legion

Require 2 years of military service for all American Citizens when they reach age 18.

      • J. Waltam

Do you really want to turn the fates of your children and grand children over to the beck and call of D.C. scum? Think: Nancy Altzheimer, Pocahontas, Maxine Waters, Two Buck Chuck Schummer, Calamity Freddie Wilson, Grandpa Munster McCain, Barry Hussein, and the live and well Clinton Machine making the calls on your kids lives. The US government is too corrupt for conscription. Middle class lives and below would be fodder for disposal by these scumbags so they can get richer. Think LBJ and Viet Nam, George Dumbya Bush and Iraq, and how well those adventures turned out.

    • Tom Hanlon

I’d love to watch as a DI turns them into crying candy ass wimps.

  • PAT RICK

Kim will probably set his coffee cup on the button.

  • harrydweeks

I’m confused DHS, did we loose our military somewhere along the line ?

    • nfcapitalist

Edward Gibon explained the reason Rome fell in 7 volumes published in 1787. A military is only as strong as the citizens they protect… and that strength has been failing from that communist disease of some marxist fantasy where an authoritarian government forges “fundamental change” and then is supposed to whither away leaving utopia… only it never whithers away, does it?

  • PatrickJ

OAN never fails to deliver. Intelligent people. Good comments on a variety of subjects facing us.

    Works for me.

    • Rufus Firefly

Except you only see comments from those with whom you agree. No wonder you have such a narrow view of the world.

  • PatrickJ

I certainly enjoyed all of your comments here this evening on a topic that has us all riveted to the news pages, following any breaking news on the subject. I hope it has a good outcome. I think the, “Trump Factor” may just wind up being a part of the solution.

At least the fat midget is now talking to South Korea, over what has been a dead telephone line for two years and counting. Of course, he was planning that all along. Trump had nothing to do with that. Of course.

  • Javanne

Talk is cheap. EVERYONE in all the prior presidential administrations said that they took the North Korean threats seriously, and that they would never let them get the bomb. Trump has said the same thing and they are STILL working on ways to deliver the nukes they would never have to the US. I don’t think Trump needs nukes to stop this guy; a few well-placed MOABs and cruise missiles on the Dear Leader and his nuke, missile, chemical, and biological research and manufacturing facilities would do the job nicely (as a prelude, knock out the artillery and missiles pointed at Seoul and Tokyo to minimize casualties there).

    • PatrickJ

I could be wrong about this, but I think North Korea represents a different military force than we have previously faced in past engagements. Kim is the last real, absolute dictator left on the planet. The people of North Korea, except for the elites, are starving.

They have read all of the flyers that are dropped over the North Korean landscape on almost a daily basis. They know what life is like on the outside. That they fear for their own lives is a given. But they want to taste the Freedom that their neighbors just to the south of them enjoy every day of every week. It’s only a matter of time.

      • nfcapitalist

And we see border guards fleeing… might be about to fail and just need that little push… a huge Lottery Bounty on he or she that ends this smuck…he will never change.

  • ETXPete

Why do I not trust this DHS Secretary?

    • nfcapitalist

      I give up… why?

    • PatrickJ

You need to come up with a better reason than that.

  • Transpare

The only serious threat North Korea seems to represent is a threat to it’s own survival if it keeps on making all this high drama over it’s absolute insignificance.

    • badass

just like the precious Saddam hussein he threaten US all the times, but where is he now?

      • Legion

        worm food .. supposedly

  • PatrickJ

I love all the comments about this, but I don’t believe any of the things you propose will become reality.
Reason I say that is, Chump meets Trump. When that happened, Kim Jong-Un’s world changed dramatically. Trump is his personal brick wall, and right now he is up against it big time.

Trump just called him out. Put up or shut up. All of a sudden, the fat midget is talking to South Korea. That line has been dead as a doornail for two years, and it all of a sudden just lit up like a Christmas tree.

    • nfcapitalist

Do you think a well advertised bounty for the heads of North Korean leadership… say $10,000,000 (million) for General Officers and $100,000,000 (million) for Kim jong un might work… fear of death by nuclear fusion versus bullets?

      • Scotty

        Fission

        • nfcapitalist

          Hydrogen bombs are fusion… no?

No matter… death by big bombs or bullets… I’d go with buying that Lottery Ticket.

      • PatrickJ

Not really. These people are not criminals. They’re just looking for freedom and hoping they can achieve it without getting killed in the process.

        • nfcapitalist

I have no idea why you would think a coup in North Korea wouldn’t be a good thing and where did you find the term “criminals?”

          • PatrickJ

nfcapitalist, you are intelligent and that is why the conversations we have are intelligent to begin with. Stay with me here.

These people have been living under the absolute rule of a dictatorship for perhaps longer than you and I have been breathing air on this planet.

You simply cannot ascribe your belief system on these people and hope to guess what they are going to do. Most of them believe this fat curmudgeon is something akin to a God and the ones who don’t, know they had better keep their mouths shut if they want to keep on living.

The reference to them not being “criminals” was simply referring to the fact that to North Korea, they are criminals if they do not believe in the doctrine.

          • nfcapitalist

Adolf Hitler was as well and there were attempts on his life by one sane man at least… putting a bounty on… this fat curmudgeon couldn’t be the worst plan to avoid the devastation that war promises… and North Korea could meld into reality as has South Korea… rich, prosperous, and free of the nightmare… worth one patriots life to shoot this nitwit born into authority.

          • PatrickJ

But China doesn’t want that to happen, and they will do everything in their power to prevent it.

          • nfcapitalist

So what… we need to worry about China’s feelings or the devastation of war on the Korean peninsula?

            Pick one… hello?

          • PatrickJ

You certainly are a taskmaster here this evening. But okay. China will take all the real estate out there that they can. They will do it every day of every week. But they will never give up a single inch of it. They will go to war before they will do that. It’s just their nature. What they believe in, if you will.

They will still own North Korea a hundred years from now and it will still be Communist. If you believe something different from that, you are just dreaming.

          • nfcapitalist

They are learning to be capitalists and looking over their shoulders at the miserable lives they are leaving behind… I believe Darwin called it… evolution.

          • PatrickJ

I love your comments, even if I don’t always agree with them. I think you knew that going in. Regardless, China, as a nation will never change. Hate to spoil your dreams and all that, but that is just a simple, undeniable fact.

          • nfcapitalist

China will take Russia and they can have it… the largest national landmass with untouched resources and only 144,000,000 (million) unarmed citizens to defend it… they’ll have their fill and by year 2100 the population bomb will have its own terminal affect on this accident… ‘matter contemplating itself,’ as Asimov chose to describe us.

            Gotta go… good night, PatrickJ.

          • PatrickJ

Yeah, me too. God bless you, my friend.

          • Tom Hanlon

Screw china, they may make verbal threats but will not get involved as they have as much to lose as we do. Call their bluff and see

  • eladtoor

The ‘Steps’ the DHS Secretary are taking are very rapid, and all headed north.
She’s had her staff studying prevailing wind currents anticipated for the next couple of weeks, and thinks the North Pole is the best chance for her to escape a death by radiation when Jong Un pushes his button

  • Ed L

How about springing more money for the Coast Guard to have six icebreaker

  • eladtoor

Yeah, Nielsen just ordered all those 1950’s era elementary school desks the governments warehoused just in case of such an event. So FedEx, and the USPS, just finishing resting after the holiday rush, are now on a crash campaign to get all those desks delivered to every US citizen, so they can ‘Hide and Cover’ before the first Kim Jong Un nukes hit.
Congress is in emergency session, trying to decide whether any desks should be given to DACA. or other illegal immigrant folks. The gopers seem to be in favor of ‘Letting them vanish’, ’cause that would solve a lot of problems. Trump seems to be thankful his wall isn’t built yet, ‘Because it would be a darn shame to see it vaporized before it had a chance to work’.
In the meantime, he and all other White House denizens are walking around under ‘Radiation-proof’ umbrellas, a special being offered and guaranteed by Bezos, ‘Together with free shipping, if purchased by credit card (Government credit cards not acceptable)’.

  • Chris Gerber

We have the resources to take him and his top military commanders out. That sounds like a better option than just making his country a big hole in the ground. Although, if that latter is the only option…. oh well!

    • Scotty

Can’t take out their leadership alone without losing half of SK. Not an option. To stop this we need to jam their comms, and while they’re figuring that out, hit as many of their gun emplacements as possible with 1kiloton tactical nukes before they can pull their lanyards on SK. At the same time, hit pyongyang with a 50 kiloton nuke flown in on a radar evading cruise missile. If we miss the fat kid, he’ll die in a bunker from radiation poisoning, or lack of food. Imagine that last option.

      • famouswolf

I’m not sure that’s an option either. Seoul is just too damn close. 35 miles, is it?

        • Scotty

          It’s all about timing.

        • Scotty

By doing nothing, we’re just asking for big trouble. Do you have something better? I’m all ears.

          • famouswolf

Maybe take out as much artillery as possible with conventional weapons (cruise missiles, MOABs, stealth bombers) in tandem over a short time span, along with hitting Kim with a surgical strike from special forces?
One thing I’m still wondering about is Mattis’ comment about ‘rods from God’.
But I would think your suggestion of tactical nukes would be preferable to waiting for Kim to hit Japan with a nuke, or the States. It would be rough on South Korea and then there is the fall out.
And I agree that it should have been done yesterday…so to speak.

          • Scotty

There is no good answer, only a less damage answer. The alternative of doing nothing is lunacy.

          • famouswolf

            Yep.

          • nfcapitalist

Maybe put ten million… why be cheap… the next Super Lottery will be paid to those who do a Valentines massacre on their North Korean leadership… 300,000,000 (million) bounty and their names forever written in history for bringing world peace?

      • nfcapitalist

I like it… the alternative for any North Koreans is to put a bullet in their Dear Leader’s head… that would serve to put that part of the world back on the track to being like China and South Korea… capitalism puts food on everyone’s table instead of some of them being food on the table.

        • Tom Hanlon

Bingo. Now we just need to get the whole lot of young scumbags here in our country to realize that. They still think socialism is the way to go and just proves that stupid is relative

      • Tom Hanlon

There is going to be loss but I’d rather there than here

  • PatrickJ

He now has missies that are capable of reaching most U.S. cities. HIs recent missile launches have proven that, and the latest missile is larger than the previous ones. The new missile can likely carry a North Korean warhead as far as Kim Jong-un could want—including anywhere in the continental US.

  • Roy Beane

Sobering thought at what damage even one hole in the protective missile defense net could cause. If just one nuke gets through, CNN will need all the pot they can lay their grubby hands on.

    • eladtoor

If Kim Jong Un has any humanitarian impulses, he may hold off on the nukes until the California pot market has a chance to get rolling, so when the first nukes hit LA and San Fran, a lot of folks won’t notice.

      • nfcapitalist

He has a sense of humor… now that’s funny.

      • Tom Hanlon

San Fran first please, then Sacramento

  • nfcapitalist

Remember those think tanks that were supposed to look over the horizon and prepare for our enemies, the electric grid… completely vulnerable, the borders unguarded, news media creating division and chaos, educators and politicians doing the same, whose side were those think tanks working for?

    • eladtoor

There may be some collusion going on. The same guys that own the Think Tanks own the Nuke Factories, and the remote islands to run to.
(Overheard at a US Chamber of Commerce Director’s meeting: “Gee, wouldn’t this be a great place to live if all those effing peons weren’t around, complaining all the time?”)

      • nfcapitalist

Think Jane Fonda was overheard telling Ted Turner, “Wouldn’t it be nice if nuclear war broke out and we were safe down here in South America?”

Paraphrased, for sure… but was something like that.

    • All American

      Not we the people👍🏻

    • famouswolf

You just answered your own rhetorical question. It sure as hell wasn’t our side.

    • LuciusAnnaeusSeneca

The latest National Security Strategy makes some of these priority items including border security and protecting the national electrical grid. At least this administration understands the country’s security needs. However, it has to deal with eight years of previous neglect, and there is a lot of catching up to do.

    • Tom Hanlon

      Not America’s for sure

    • HarryObrian

      The global side.
When one’s job is simply to ‘publish or perish’ it is not hard to imagine that job being attractive to the physically and morally weak whose motto becomes “Job Security is Job 1”. While you raise the question with respect to think tanks the construct applies to many politicians as well.

  • Scotty

As NK’s nuclear abilities increase, so will his threats, ultimately leading to world wide nuclear blackmail. When are we going to stop screwing around with this clown and preemptively eliminate the threat once and for all.

    • All American

It’s a surprise just hold on with eyes and ears wide open

      • Scotty

I hope so. This isn’t going away, and will only get worse over time. Trump needs to act soon.

        • famouswolf

Actually, as much as I admire and support DJT, I think he should already have done it. The price in lives and infrastructure will just get worse every day it’s postponed. Lil Kim is doing nothing but stalling, and tweaking the eagle from time to time. He’s got to be stark raving crazy.

        • All American

          Have faith!

        • Tom Hanlon

I concur but congress will get butt hurt

  • Roy Beane

Get the WALL started NOW. Start at Yuma, AZ and go north right down the Cal / AZ / Nevada state line and then west at the Oregon / Cal line and close off California from the rest of the country. Then Kim can target practice all he wants on Hollywood and the Berkeley bunch all he wants.

    • All American

Yes build the wall between America and California.
Every Patriot should be relocated soon🇺🇸

      • Scotty

Just give little Kimmie the coordinates for the San Andreas fault. Solve everything at the same time.

        • All American

          There you go👍🏻

        • nfcapitalist

You’re good… but you might run the gauntlet with those posters on the kidnapping page… they wanted to string me up for noting that a “Child Find” trending issue page might be a better option for making that story a nationwide story… San Andreas fault… but the children… the children… lol!!!!

    • Tom Hanlon

Now that is the best idea I’ve heard yet. You should consider running for office

  • “I’m a Rooster!”

It certainly seems as if we’re as prepared as we could be – according to the DHS and Trump. Having some public broadcast messages on “what to do in case of…” might be a good thing too.

    • gabriel

Seems are nothing to do in that case.

    • eladtoor

‘GET THE EFF- OUT BEFORE NOW’, over and over, would do it, and it’s short enough that a lot of them could be broadcast before the first nukes hit, hopefully.

  • HarryObrian

Maybe they’re loading planes with TSA agents to be dropped into NKorea to grope Kim Jong-un.

    • Roy Beane

I dunno about that….that twisted N.Korean turnip might actually enjoy it, as sick as he appears to be.

      • All American

        He has radiation poisoning 👍🏻

            Oh good twofer

I did notice he has to be held up…. frequently.

    • Scotty

If they do to Kim what they do to old ladies in wheelchairs, Kim would have them shot.

They’d probably find he is a eunoch.

    • J. Waltam

I’d sure like to grope Kirstjen – said Slick Willie.

  • Disgusted Caucasian

Just get your butt in gear and secure the border Madam Secretary. NOTHING is more important to the security of this nation.
