OAN Newsroom

Embattled Democrat Congressman John Conyers is retiring after several women accused him of sexual misconduct.

The Michigan representative announced he will not finish out the rest of his term, and will not seek reelection in 2018.

Conyers then endorsed his son John Conyers III to replace him despite his son making no plans to run for Congress

However, his great nephew Ian Conyers did announce plans to run for the seat.

The news comes after another woman accused Conyers of groping her while she was working as a congressional staffer.

“My legacy can’t be compromised or diminished in any way by what we’re going through…this too shall pass, and I want you to know that my legacy will continue through my children,” Conyers stated.

The 88-year-old leaves his seat as the longest serving House member.

  • A marcus Young

No retirement when you steal someones liberty with rape and sexual assault, your place to retire is prison. Lock them up!

  • Letmesay

    .We need term limits..NOW

  • majoro4

OK. That’s nice. You still need to be charged with a crime and receive the consequences.

  • Redduke

We learned our lesson in the DC Mayor’s race. The CBC is a criminal organization and the constituents of that caucus doesnt care.

  • SlowpokeSA

Talked about his “legacy” s if he owned the seat – and he wants his son to “have” it? Is there not a black Republican that can run in Detroit? ANY Republican? I wish I could throw a million dollars into that race. Where’s Bannon et al when ya need them?

  • Javanne

Good bye, good luck, and good riddance.

  • Un-orthodox

First, all criminals should be removed from Congress and put in jail. By criminals I understand people who would be convicted if they weren’t in Congress. There would be several I’m afraid. Then those who make racist remarks and practice hate speech. Half of democtats, especially African Americans, would be gone. (Paradox, right?) Then, make lobbying illegal. 20 years in prison for that, and America would be a better country right away. Not perfect, but much better.

    • Redduke

Lobbying is written into the Constitution. Are you against the Constitution or asking for an amendment?

  • Impaler

His legacy of unwanted groping of women in the halls of congress will continue with his children.

  • Wolfer

He has been screwing the people that elected him for his whole career. He is one of the leading gimmdats in the whole country. A major example of blacks trying to tear sown America.

  • Marinesgt77

    good riddance to bad rubbish.

  • AshJonson

And his criminal offspring needs to sit down and shut up.

  • eladtoor

When you can’t get it up anymore, that’s sexual misconduct, and time to retire.

  • Ray

Great, one less “D” in the House.

  • Wheel of misfortune

“my legacy will continue through my children…” So your seed will die. Awesome. Problem solved!

  • HML

The irony of Conyers reign, taking advantage of women that helped put him in, and KEEP him in power.

  • Deplorable Phytomorphogenesis

NO MORE conyers, great nephew or not!

    GOOD RIDDANCE!!

  • Twinkle Toes

“My legacy can’t be compromised or diminished in any way by what we’re going through…this too shall pass, and I want you to know that my legacy will continue through my children,” Conyers stated.

No wonder boys have so many issues today. It’s hard to fathom this man is proud of his immoral actions. Very sad.

  • YaPiDo

Him and Bill Cosby were big stuff back in the day.

  • Twinkle Toes

    What a puke.

  • Twinkle Toes

“My legacy can’t be compromised or diminished in any way by what we’re going through…this too shall pass, and I want you to know that my legacy will continue through my children,” Conyers stated.

I find this statement of his to be revolting and disgusting. If he is proud of himself and has taught his children these virtues, it’s not wonder we have so many problems. He’s gross.

  • Twinkle Toes

Conyers, like so many others have outlived their usefulness in the Senate. We should have age limits in addition to term limits. At 88 years old, you are out for a free ride compliments of us the taxpayer. They have got to go. He is text book example of abuse and corruption.

  • Andy Schuetz

I’d hate like hell to think that I would leave a Conyers type ‘legacy’ to my descendants………….

  • ShawnEdwards

The next story is what was his net worth coming in compared to now

  • southdfw

    HIS SON????
    ROFLMAO!

    • southdfw

What does say about how he thinks,,, if he was to think,,,
he thinks these is handed down, given, to his choosing?

      Wow, how out of touch.

      TERM LIMITS,
      Convention of States,
‘Cause they will never impose term limits themselves!

  • digipanic

He should probably be in jail.

  • Tado

    Retire.
    Seek assistance.
    Assisted suicide.

  • Ezra Tank

    Corrupt to the core

  • BNG66

We have term limits…it’s called GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE

    • Twinkle Toes

      Good one!

  • BNG66

And this perfect example of liberal trash thinks he can ” pass on his legacy” by right to his son?..
    LMFAO!..
    #weVote in America

  • ImStillaYankee

“My legacy”? Arrogant sob—he was a damn Representative & a leech at that. 88 years old & still sucking the blood of the American taxpayer. At least we won’t be paying for his pension for very long.

  • Flagfriend

Apparently we are now openly competing with Mexico in the area of government corruption. How far we have fallen.

  • Just A Guy

    Well…bye.

  • Deny

“My legacy can’t be compromised or diminished in any way by what we’re going through”. It already HAS been. No fool like an old fool is there.

He has been living off of the taxpayer far too long. Time for some term limits!

  • Big Al from Big D

Aw…… Retire with full benefits (including pay) before being found guilty in a court of law.

  • 2EdgedSword

Great news. Many others to follow.

  • JaySands1234

Once a scumbag always a scumbag and his kid is probably the same way.The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

  • Phi Lemon

In the immortal words of Jim Morrison: “dead cat … dead rat … fat cat in a top hat … thinks he’s an aristocrat … that’s crap” Fare thee well John Con!

  • TexanForever

To avoid possible censure or banning from this great site I will avoid using the N-word and just say there might be a cultural component at work here. This old horn dog is under the impression his son can inherit his kingdom. … Just imagine how much damage this lack of intellect and integrity has harmed not only his own ignorant constituents, but the rest of the nation when his vote counted on enacting federal laws that affect the rest of the nation.

This slug should never have been permitted into the halls of Congress.
    .

  • America’s Race To The Bottom

Apparently, he represents a district of morons who will only elect another like him anyway. It’s a lost district.

  • mark abby

This clown thinks he’s a king and wants to appoint his inexperienced son to his thrown. This is what we are allowing in our government! We have allowed them to think they are kings and queens. Trump is right: drain the damn swamp…..fast!

    • tedlv

      Game of Thrones, American style!

  • CDG

While it’s unlikely, I hope the people of his district have enough sense to not vote the son into office. Talk about nepotism. Yikes. Congress should be frequently refreshed with new individuals.

    • Bud

Whomever the replacement may be, in the long run he will not be even a smidgen better. Brain-dead electorates are not capable of electing anyone with even a modicum of common sense.

  • JimStaudt

What a crook. Even as he retires in shame and disgrace, has the gall to think he can “bequeath” his seat to his son. DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY, you old fool.

  • davej

Bada Bump Bump Bump, Another one bites the dust.

  • Racer X

One more scumbag down the drain.

  • SaidNO2Liberalism

This bastard SOB POS needs to be in jail for stealing taxpayers money for personal use.

  • SB

    Resigning, not retiring!

  • Fidgets

Why should he ‘retire’??? He should be forced to resign in disgrace.

  • Brad

Want to thin the swamp do the following:
    • go on Medicare @ 65
•. go on Social Security Payments based on earnings
•. be treated as the rest of us Americans.
Only then will we have honest working politicians in Washington who represent the people.

  • Lonney L Sennett

No more than two terms, and no more retirement unless they cumulatively (in multiple roles/different levels) serve the government more than 30 years. We need to also address the Supreme Court. Serve till you die does not ensure that we have the sharpest legal minds ruling on the law of the land. Lately it seems that if some members of the Supreme Court want to aid an agenda, they just refuse to rule on something. Not good enough!

  • Guest123

He will retire with egg on his face

    • Fidgets

So what??? He still gets all of the benefits on our dime. BS – he should resign in shame and lose all benefits.

  • …remain calm and return fire

another piece of fecal matter flushed out of the swamp…..next up, clown face Franken…

  • Living_The_Dream

Happy to see this guy calling it quits. Too bad it has to take criminal conduct and a lot of pressure to get him to leave. Still boggles my mind that he made proposals to allow “felons” across the country, the right to vote while incarcerated. Goes to show that Democrats will stoop to the lowest levels to get re-elected.

  • Bruce Johnson

Okay maybe not term limits because I agree a good person in Congress is good person how about a lie detector test for every one of them every year was certain classified questions. You fail, you’re gone

  • HillCountryTexas

Unfortunately these idiots can not be fired but once every election cycle. The public sector gets fired for bringing the bad publicity to the company. For politicians, it is just business as usual and oh yea, I retire before you can prosecute me and laugh all the way to the bank. Sickening.

  • brad m

Again I stress that term limits are not needed. What we need is for people to pay attention, keep up with what is happening, get knowledgeable, and vote accordingly.

  • Bruce Johnson

no retirement benefits for this scum. he is getting an ez paid way out of this! no retirement!!

  • John Degel

Saw it coming…but we don’t need a Conyers dynasty any more than we need a Clinton dynasty.

  • Jimbo

The old reprobate is trying to duck out with his retirement before he is prosecuted. He really does think he is King by selecting his heir to succeed him.

  • Paul H

Bingo! I forgot who called it but someone in the media said that Conyer’s “stress” hospital admission was a prelude to him “retiring”!

  • survivor50

So what is MITCH and Ryan going to do about THIS ???
    Throw him out ???
How about Roy Moore??? Franken ???

    • Bud

      What about Roy Moore???

      • tedlv

Discredited accusions are the conviction for conservatives. Even photographic proof isn’t enough to get rid of a proven harrasser, if it’s a demoncrap.

  • Localdude

I just googled ‘Detroit decay pics’….yeh, what a wonderful legacy this individual left his constituents. A DNC vision for all of America. The same legacy that said 1% growth for all of America was going to have to be the ‘new normal’. One old, compromised swamp creature, dead due to his own actions. The water line dropped and he has just keeled over. More to follow, the consequences are in those those pics for the USA if this ‘swamp draining’ does not continue.

  • Gregory

The look on his face says it all “there goes my gravy train”

  • Ed L

About time Maybe it will start a trend. All the old farts over 70 in congress resign or/and jump out a window

  • Robert Sigler

Defund his Viagra account and send him on his merry way!

  • Todo

Legacy? Geez, the nerve on this guy. Some in politics treat their posts like a business they can pass on to their children. I guess their seats are pretty profitable ventures…it’s not supposed to be that way though. Drain the swamp!

  • mbrewer566

Retirement…with full pension and lifetime healthcare, and no shame. And we the taxpayers foot the bill for his legal settlements. But it’s the big bad corporations we all need to be scared of…..give me a break.

  • Varangian Guard

I called it ! My error was in supposing that his ex-con wife Monica would be taking the chair next on the Detroit name recognition train, but it sounds like Junior and his great-grand nephew will duke it out over the Conyers name recognition. They are both young enough to mop up another 50-60 years of crooked Democratic Congress money.
Nothing has changed at home here in the D

  • Sui-Juris

Since when is a Congressional seat a family business?

    • Tyrone

Unfortunately, they and many voters think it is.

    • Todo

      Exactly!

    • YaPiDo

Tells you the mindsets at work here.

  • Lawmadsen

by retiring he keeps his pension, that needs to be taken from him and distributed amongst his many victims.

    • Fidgets

ABSOLUTELY _ or paid back to the taxpayers. This p o s gets to ‘retire’ off the taxpayers? Forget that – he should be forced to resign in disgrace, with no benefits.

  • Russ Hardgrove

About 1/1000th of the swamp drained. 535 (100 Sen and 435 Rep) plus an assorted number of entrenched beaurocraps. MAGA!!

  • C B

The bottom muck of the Swamp , now predicting a family member will rise in his putrid gas bubble ………

  • Gus Anderson

What a scumbag POS!!! Old geezer, this ain’t no f’ing monarchy!!! My hope is that the people of Detroit will run screaming away from another Conyers…but, alas, they probably won’t.

  • Theo Stall

    SO– when Democrats are PREVERTS–
they just get to retire when ever they want and KEEP THE TAXPAYER PENSION!!!

  • All American

    The Draining of the Swamp🇺🇸
Will he reimburse the money that he took from taxpayers

    • Roy Beane

Not likely. He’s probably busily stuffing his pockets with all the taxpayers cash he can get his grubby paws on as we speak.

      • …remain calm and return fire

stealing pencils and paper clips too

    • …remain calm and return fire

no doubt he has a chunk of the missing $21 trillion….probably blew some of it on Detroit hookers

  • PatriotInk

Given the collective intellect of those who voted for this slug, I don’t expect change of any kind.

And, WE, THE SUBJECTS of the embezzlement of public trust will continue to pay for this nothing’s retirement.

Of course he is going to “retire.”

    • Generalmayhem

And have full health care benefits separate from Oblowmecare.

      • ImStillaYankee

        Emperorcare.

      • YaPiDo

You know, congress is exempted themselves from Social Security. They installed a much better retirement system for themselves.

  • landy fincannon

Slush funds, voting for your own raises, the best insurance money can buy, housing allowance, more vacation time then you can shake a stick , and they feel entitled to more.

  • Brad

    The cesspool swamp is draining.

  • Snotslinger

Getin out of dodge before it’s payback time??

  • Jock E Shift

    You’re next, Franken!

    • PatriotInk

      Hoping you are right…

    • Russ Hardgrove

      Al(vin) Franken(berry) Esquire?? hahaha

  • Roy Beane

Way too much “sex in the halls” of congress going on these days. One more perv gone, but there’s still plenty more in there……

    • PatriotInk

      No doubt!!!

    • YaPiDo

It sound be apparent that sex is everywhere and a universal problem for all women.

  • M10 Bob

“Serving” the public had a whole ‘nuther meaning to this elected official!

  • Bill Smith

Term Limits, Term Limits, Term Limits !

    • Gus Anderson

ONE LIFE, ONE TERM, THAT’S IT!! NO MORE RE-ELECTIONS.

      • seawulf

Yes, once he dies, he can only vote for Democrats.

      • mark abby

        And no golden pensions

        • munchenfez

No salary. Just provable expenses. Service to your nation should be a duty.

      • The Punisher

with a hefty pension, does he get one if he resigns, or only when he retires, or does he go to prison for misspending the tax payers money along with the whole swamp.

    • Russ Hardgrove

And, hilariously, their (the current office holders) retort (to term limits) is that “nothing would get done!”. Uh, except…. that PRESUPPOSES something is (and has been) done recently. hahaha

    • KMA

Term limits have their own problems, ie nothing for citizens would be done. They would get what they can and get out, just like mayor’s… a boundary line here,a code enforcement there etc.
How about a 6 month review based on “pass/fail system by voters of that state? A simple postcard with pass/fail on it sent to registered voters.

      Pass..continue!
      Fail.. All benefits rescinded!

      • lee

I like it, now let’s get it done.

    • Phi Lemon

State convention under Article 5 only way to get term limits. Did you know that 29 states (out of 34 required for a convention) have already applied for a convention to propose a constitutional amendment imposing balanced budget upon federal government? see Balanced Budget Amendment Task Force

    • “I’m a Rooster!”

This ‘ol boy has done his damage. At 88, he will live well and relish the memories of the women he has abused and gotten away with. Similar to Cosby.

      • Wheel of misfortune

Love you man. Not even close to Cosby tho…

    • BNG66

      That’s racist. …
Lmao….I had to say it 1st before the leftist did 🙂

    • Twinkle Toes

Mob only yer limits but age limits are equally if not more important

  • Freedom

Now get franken cause hes not good enough, not smart enough dog gonneit nobody likes him.

    • All American

If any average citizen did this our employment would abruptly end!

    • TexanForever

GREAT !!! … Right out of his old so-called “comedy” act.
      .

  • Bill Smith

Now he can pay back the Tax Payers all the Settlement money too. Should come out of his Bloated Retirement. POS !

  • Nick Rose

Didn’t this pervert marry his 25 year old intern when he was in his sixties?

    • Varangian Guard

Yes, and she just recently (2 years) got out of club fed (same place they sent Martha Stewart) for taking bribes as a Detroit City Council member. She also got fired from a Detroit Radio station recently because she was claiming she was a lobbyist and attorney, of which she has no bonafides for either.
The family is CROOKED. The son they want to follow the footsteps on is a real prize, but that is another chapter.

  • Aldo

Due process ASAP !!! And he endorsed his son to take his seat – get ya right here (hand on crotch) !!! lying liberal rat b a s t a r d !!!

    • Russ Hardgrove

wonder if he has a dictionary and could look UP nepotism!! :-p 🙂 :-O

    • Tyrone

It’s not “his” seat, it belongs to the people.
It’s not something anyone of these Swamp Creatures can hand off or will to someone.

      • S Mol

You’re talking about Detroit. There hasn’t been a true “representative” from Detroit in decades, if not generations!

        • YaPiDo

A drunk, broken, homeless, ex-con Vet would be a truer representative.

          • HML

Same with Cook Co. Il. New Oleans, Jackson, MS. Compton, NJ. DC.

        • Twinkle Toes

          Or ever

    • YaPiDo

Sound like one of those African dynasties.

  • beerman42

Need new blood. If you keep doing the same thing and expect different results your are insane. PS he still has broken the law and misused public money and should be charged and tried.

    • Flagfriend

That’s the problem, though. All the rest of them think removal from office, whether by force of of ones own accord, is such a disaster that when it happens they collectively feel sorry for the guy and leave him alone. The idea of losing that powerful position is almost unthinkable to them. Every one of them. Additionally, they realize if they initiate anything more than a slap on the hand for their fellow office holder, fairly soon the fingers will be pointed at them, and who knows how many of them have skeletons in the closet they don’t want brought to the light of day. That’s why it has become such a swamp.

But how will the next one learn that there are consequences to
bad actions? The offenders need to be spanked, and spanked hard, if for no other reason than to send a message to the rest.
