China agrees to hold discussions with ASEAN officials to address issues surrounding the South China Sea.
The Chinese Premier said he hoped the talks would increase stability in the region.
The leaders are expected to discuss a code of conduct framework negotiated earlier this year.
Although open discussion is a step forward, critics say it could still be years before an agreement is made.
This comes after several nations , including Vietnam and the Philippines, criticized China’s claim to the region, which is a key trade route for several neighboring countries.
During his tour of Asia, President Trump offered to help the Southeast Asian nations mediate a deal with China.
