Democrat Senator Al Franken is resigning amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
The Democrat announced his resignation from the Senate floor early Thursday amid calls for him to step down from more than 30 of his Democrat colleagues, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
The chairman of the DNC also called for him to resign.
Addressing his colleagues, the senator said he was shocked and upset over the allegations against him, but that all women deserve to be heard and taken seriously.
Franken maintained his innocence, saying some allegations were not true and other situations are different from what he remembers.
The former comedian said serving in the Senate has been a great honor, but his decision to resign was made in the best interest of Minnesota residents.
Franken will step down in the coming weeks.
At least eight women have accused the senator of sexual misconduct.
The governor of Minnesota is expected to tap Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith to replace Franken.
